Southampton and Wrexham have one of the most obscure head-to-head records of two sides facing each other on the Championship opening weekend.

Southampton host Wrexham on the opening weekend of the 2025/26 Championship campaign with a 12:30 pm kick-off at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Last season, the fortunes for both sides could not have ended more differently.

Southampton were relegated to the Championship from the Premier League, and have since appointed Will Still to spearhead the Saints this season.

Wrexham made history with successive promotions by reaching the Championship, and are hunting for an instant jump to the top flight.

Both sides possess serious quality, but given that they last faced off over 40 years ago, the opening clash is impossible to predict.

When was the last time Southampton played Wrexham?

The trajectories of both Southampton and Wrexham have been total opposites over the last few decades.

Southampton have been present in the Premier League for several seasons, whereas Wrexham have loitered in non-league football before Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over.

In the 2025/26 Championship, both sides will be hoping to impact the promotion race, and are poised to meet for the first time in 46 years.

Southampton and Wrexham are both promotion contenders in 2025/26

Both Southampton and Wrexham have been active in the summer transfer market ahead of the opening clash.

The Red Dragons have brought some stellar Championship talent to the Racecourse this summer, with Josh Windass joining Wrexham after his Sheffield Wednesday exit and the imminent arrival of Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore.

Southampton’s summer business has been dominated by potential outgoings, with Everton pushing to sign Tyler Dibling.

The two sides face off for the first time in 46 years, and the game will be available to watch on Sky Sports Football as fellow second tier supporters tune in to see how early promotion candidates begin their respective campaigns.
