After Middlesbrough’s convincing win over Sheffield United, the OPTA supercomputer has made a clear prediction about Rob Edwards’ title chances.
Middlesbrough beat Sheffield United at the Riverside Stadium, stretching the club’s winning streak to four in a row.
It has been a phenomenal start to the season for Rob Edwards’ side, who have shown themselves to be a massively improved outfit following the departure of Michael Carrick in the summer.
The win against Sheffield United saw Hayden Hackney deliver for Middlesbrough yet again with a brilliant performance, but it was Tommy Conway who scored the decisive goal against the Blades.
Following the home victory, the OPTA Analyst supercomputer has delivered updated predictions for the remainder of the 2025/26 Championship season, with Middlesbrough tipped for greatness.

Middlesbrough predicted to win the Championship after Sheffield United victory
According to OPTA, the supercomputer has predicted Middlesbrough to win the Championship title this season.
Rob Edwards’ side have been given a 17.92% potential of winning the title from this point, with Leicester City coming in 2nd with a 14.98 chance of the Championship top spot.
This puts Middlesbrough’s promotion chances at 29.66%, and a play-off finish at 31.88% likely.
For any pessimistic Middlesbrough supporters, they will surely have their nerves calmed by the fact that their chances of relegation sit at just 0.80% likely.
Sheffield United, who Middlesbrough beat this weekend to sit top of the table, were initially predicted to win the Championship before the season, but have now been predicted a 9th-place finish after losing four on the bounce.

How Middlesbrough’s 2025/26 start compares to 2015/16 promotion-winning campaign
The last time Middlesbrough reached promotion to the Premier League was the successful 2015/16 Championship season under Aitor Karanka, where they finished 2nd.
Despite the success that came at the end of that season, 10 years ago, it was not the best start to the campaign for Boro, who notched just five points from their first four games.
This included a win at home to Bolton Wanderers with Diego Fabbrini bagging the first goal, while Kike Garcia netted a brace to give Boro an unassailable 3-0 lead at half-time.
After a brilliant four wins in a row, there is an expectation that Middlesbrough could deliver a highly anticipated promotion and replicate Aitor Karanka’s success from a decade earlier.
