Swansea City fans are concerned after ‘shocking’ pre-season defeat, keeping £5m star man is imperative now

Swansea City fans are reeling after a pre-season defeat to League Two side Cheltenham, a result that has amplified concerns about their squad’s defensive frailties.

The 2024/25 Championship campaign saw Swansea City secure an 11th-place finish, largely thanks to Alan Sheehan’s significant impact after taking over as head coach and steering the team to a strong end with 23 points from his final 13 games.

While the exciting news of Snoop Doggs co-ownership has brought a buzz to the club, the performance on the pitch has quickly brought supporters back to reality.

With manager Alan Sheehan plotting a Premier League return, the recent loss and ongoing defensive dilemmas, and reports of another Championship side eyeing one defender make it vital that the Swans hold onto this player.

Swansea fans label pre-season performance ‘totally shocking’

Cheltenham went ahead early in the second half but Swansea levelled when a Cheltenham player conceded an own goal from Josh Tymon’s cross.

But the League Two side secured the victory during the final 10 minutes with Lee Angol scoring for the hosts.

This left Swansea fans concerned, with many voicing their frustrations on X after the game.

One fan said: “We really need some more defenders, we need a RCB, CB and LB desperately and definitely a striker. Otherwise, we won’t be getting those playoffs.”

Another said: “Need some more depth.”

“The first 60 were decent. But I don’t agree that a pre-season game is an excuse to lose to a poor league 2 team (they are also in pre-season). This game, like last season, made it clear we have an issue with chance creation and finishing. Hopefully RM works on this ASAP,” one said.

One said: “Don’t be surprised if we end up changing manager in a few months! Early but wouldn’t surprise me at all.”

Middlesbrough eye Swansea defender Josh Key

Swansea have seen players come and go this transfer window, and, according to reports from Alan Nixon, one defender is being eyed by another Championship side.

Middlesbrough are eyeing Swansea defender Josh Key, with a £5 million valuation set by the Swans for the 25-year-old.

This news comes at a critical time for Swansea, who are already grappling with defensive fragilities. Key, a versatile defender signed in July 2023, has been a consistent performer, capable across various defensive roles.

Losing a key asset to a Championship rival like Middlesbrough would further exacerbate concerns about squad depth and stability, especially as Swansea aim to strengthen, not weaken.

Given Key’s contract runs until at least 2026, the £5 million fee, while providing funds, might be seen as undervaluing a player with his potential and versatility.

The timing is also problematic, potentially disrupting pre-season plans and forcing a scramble for replacements. This situation presents a real test for Swansea’s strategic priorities and defensive resolve ahead of the new season.
