Birmingham City have had one of the most impressive summers from a promoted club in Championship history.
Neil Warnock believes Blues will be pushing for promotion, although Tom Wagner has tried to play down his side’s chances. Yet, there are Premier League ambitions for the club that won League One with a record number of points last season.
‘Signing of the summer’ claims have been made about Tommy Doyle, after the midfielder left Wolverhampton Wanderers to join Chris Davies at St. Andrew’s and there are high expectations for 2025/26.
It’s been the financial strength of Birmingham that has made them such a force over the 12 months and their ambition will pay off as the years go by.

Tom Wagner can make huge profit on Birmingham City in the future from Tom Brady
While it was a disappointing start to life as Blues’ owner, Wagner’s reputation has grown exponentially recently and bringing Tom Brady to the table two years ago has helped.

Our finance expert, Adam Williams, has explained more about Brady’s role at Birmingham and what it means for the club going forward. He said: “We don’t know how much Tom Brady paid for his stake in Birmingham City, but we do know his shareholding is just over three per cent.
“I suspect he probably didn’t pay anything for his shares. Instead, there was probably some sort of ambassadorial contract drawn up whereby he is obliged to market the club, be one of its public faces in the documentary, have his team help out with social media and so forth.
“His recent comments suggest he isn’t at all involved in day-to-day operations, though we have already known that for some time. Brady doesn’t need to be on top of the detail and know all the intricacies of FFP – he’s a billboard for the club. We know he doesn’t have any voting rights either.
“So, what’s in it for him? Well, when he exits, his shares are going to be worth a lot of money. The level of ambition that Wagner is showing is pretty astounding. The stadium project and the amount of external investment – Shelby have loaned the club £72m to date – tells you all you need to know. If they’re promoted, I think the club can probably justify a £500m valuation.

“All of a sudden, Brady’s stake is then worth around £15m. And if they establish themselves in the top flight and they get the stadium project right, that can increase exponentially.
“Football clubs, especially ones with huge potential like Birmingham, almost invariably increase in value year on year. If you have some free cash lying around, you’re better off investing it in a football club than you are just about any index fund in the world – assuming you can get to the point of exit and there is market for your shares.
“While we are seeing an increase in the number of minority investment deals in English football, I’d predict that Brady’s stake will be wrapped up with Knighthead’s when the time does eventually come to cash in.
“Clearly, we’re a long, long way off that point, but that will be the masterplan.“
Getting to the Premier League is vital for Blues
This is a very important campaign for Birmingham, with the battle for Premier League football expected to be incredibly tight.
Blues have managed to crack the US market, and bringing Brady to the club is a huge reason behind that. However, Wagner cannot let this momentum stall now.

Those at the top at Birmingham will know that pushing such a significant amount of money into the team does become more and more difficult to do the longer a side is in the Championship.
Therefore, as Adam stated, promotion is the priority for the club and that is why they have gone all out this summer to bring the squad to a level that can compete at the top of the second tier.
