Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has warned his players against over-celebrating the side’s promotion to the Championship, due to upcoming fixtures in a huge week for the Midlands outfit.

The Blues have managed to bounce back out of League One at the first time of asking, following a summer of turnover within the squad.

With Chris Davies at the helm, a near-perfect record in the third tier has seen Birmingham earn promotion to the Championship with six games to spare.

A victory over Peterborough United sealed it all, as goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman secured a 2-1 win – cancelling Kwame Poku’s first-half equaliser.

While the Birmingham players are celebrating the achievement in double quick time, there is a need to refocus for the week ahead.

Chris Davies warns Birmingham players over celebrations before EFL Trophy final

With Birmingham City finally promoted back to the Championship, the celebrations can kickstart on phase one of their new project coming to a close.

The ambitious owners have always outlined their goal of turning the Blues into a club with ambitions beyond just second tier football though.

While that will have to wait a little longer, so too will the full blown partying among the group of players.

Birmingham have the EFL Trophy final to worry about over the weekend, where they take on Peterborough yet again, this time at Wembley.

With another big day around the corner, Davies warned his players about the celebration plans leading into it.

He told the press: “I think a few of them have had a few swigs of champagne already actually but we have got another game coming up!

“We have got to be careful but they should enjoy it. I said to them in the huddle there, every staff member and every player has turned this club around from where it was.”

It leads into a huge clash for Birmingham, where they will be looking to complete a special kind of league and cup double.

Birmingham City and Peterborough United record in EFL Trophy final

With the league meeting between Birmingham and Peterborough now out of the way, the slate is wiped clean for a meeting in the cup.

The Blues will no doubt be favourites to run out as winners, but the Posh have their own history with the competition too.

Peterborough won the EFL Trophy last season and are looking to become the first team to win it back-to-back in the competition’s history.

It would be their third time lifting the cup, while that would also be the record for Birmingham if they run out victorious.
