We’ve known for a while now that Birmingham City would end up getting promoted, but the Blues finally confirmed it tonight with a win over Peterborough United.
After spending big in the summer, it was always likely Birmingham would be the team to beat in League One this season.
Tom Brady promised fans good times were coming, and he wasn’t wrong. Between the talent Birmingham have assembled, and the fine work of Chris Davies in getting them to tick, the Blues have been relentless in their march to promotion this year.
Birmingham have been breaking records all season, and after an impressive run of late, they’ve finally clinched their place back in the Championship for 2025/26 by picking up three points away at Peterborough United tonight.

Birmingham City are going up, and Blues fans are buzzing
In a dress rehearsal for this weekend’s Vertu Trophy final, Peterborough took on Birmingham looking to spring a surprise and stop the Blues in their tracks. Ultimately, they failed in that task, though.
A goal from Alfie May gave Birmingham the lead, but they were pegged back moments later by a Kwame Poku goal. But, as we’ve seen time and time again this season, Davies’ side muscled ahead again, with Taylor Gardner-Hickman firing his side ahead after 37 minutes.
A relatively quiet second half ensued, and in the end, the three points went Birmingham’s way. And, more importantly, those points were enough to mathematically confirm that they will be playing in the Championship next season.
Reacting to the good news on Twitter/X, Birmingham fans were full of joy to be returning to the second tier. One fan wrote: “What a season this has been! Simply incredible!”
Others commented on the Blues’ time in the third tier, saying, “I thought League One was meant to be hard,” and “It’s been a brilliant season, we needed this reset. On to bigger and better things.”
Another added, “Well done lads, got the job done first time of asking,” while others said, “Biggest club in the EFL, we’re going for back to back promotions.”
Some fans are clearly still hungry for more, with one adding, “The first task ticked off the list. Congratulations to all involved,” as Birmingham still chase the title and the EFL Trophy, too.
That same sentiment was echoed by another, who said: “I mean we’ve risen to where we were before, now to keep rising. Bring on Sunday.”
Another was dreaming big and looking to the future, writing: “Let’s go! Next year to the Premier League.”

Will Birmingham City claim League One record points haul?
Most weeks, Birmingham have brushed aside their opponents with ease. Sometimes, the Blues have had to find a way to win ugly, but they’ve almost always got the job done. That’s the sign of true champions.
Ask a supercomputer and it’ll tell you Birmingham are set to finish with 106.5 points this year. At this rate, they could well end up with more than that even.
Either way, it is very hard to imagine a world where they don’t break Wolves’ record points tally (103) from the 2013/14 season.
After tonight’s result, Birmingham are only eight points away from that figure, and they still have six games to play. Can any team from here on out really trouble Birmingham? Probably not.
Now, the problem for most second tier teams is that Birmingham are ready to spend big in the summer and go for promotion again next season. With the way they’ve steamrolled the competition this year, we wouldn’t bet against them doing it again.
