Sheffield United target Chris Mepham was part of Wales’ seven-goal thriller against Belgium on Monday night.

Mepham celebrated promotion with Sunderland in 2024/25 after beating Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final.

The Welsh international was sent on loan to the Stadium of Light from Bournemouth and excelled under Regis Le Bris with 38 appearances and 11 clean sheets to his name.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed that Sunderland were interested in signing Mepham permanently, with his contract set to expire.

However, Burnley and Sheffield United also want to sign Mepham, who was in action last night as Belgium cruelly beat Wales.

How the Welsh media rated Sheffield United target Chris Mepham

In a World Cup qualifying match, Belgium raced into a 3-0 first-half lead against Wales, as many expected the hosts to trounce them.

But Wales fought back brilliantly to bring the scores level, thanks to goals from Fulham’s Harry Wilson, Stoke City signing Sorba Thomas and Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson.

Unfortunately, after working so hard to come back, Kevin De Bruyne broke their hearts with an 88th-minute winner, which left Wales second in Group J with seven points from four matches.

Sheffield United target Mepham played the full ninety minutes during the defeat, and Welsh outlet Y Clwb Pêl-droed have since released their ratings for the tie, giving the 27-year-old a 5/10 and writing: “Brought into the side as a replacement for the injured Neco Williams, he struggled against his attacking counterparts on a difficult night. 5/10.”

Chris Mepham’s stats vs Belgium

Mepham may have struggled to live with the pace of Belgium’s attack, but he was assured in possession, completing 81 of his 85 passes and four of six long balls.

Sheffield United improving their defence this summer

After narrowly missing out on promotion, the Blades have looked to improve their defence.

We exclusively revealed over the weekend that Sheffield United are closing in on the signing of Jimmy Dunne, with his QPR contract set to expire.

Should they also add Mepham to their squad and keep hold of Anel Ahmedhodzic, Wilder would have some serious defensive options to select from next season.

Having watched Mepham excel for Sunderland in 2024/25, including in the play-off final, he’s certainly someone they should go all out to sign.
