Why Adam Armstrong grabbed Championship return ‘with both hands’ at West Brom despite Premier League promotion with Southampton

West Brom signed four players in the January transfer window, with Tony Mowbray’s side hoping to achieve a play-off place.

Tammer Bany, Isaac Price, and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Will Lankshear were three of the four, alongside Southampton’s versatile forward Adam Armstrong — who the Baggies may eye permanently this summer.

West Brom and Jayson Molumby will hope their fans create a good atmosphere between now and May, especially with experts backing West Brom to make the top six after securing Armstrong’s services to reunite with Tony Mowbray.

Games between teams in the mix will be most pivotal, including West Brom travelling to Coventry City, but also hosting Sunderland on Saturday. They were defeated 1-0 at The Hawthorns despite having more shots and chances than the visitors.

Adam Armstrong’s West Brom and Southampton admission

A more front-footed approach in attack is just one of the many differences between Corberan and Mowbray, with plenty of change on and off the pitch. The Championship table can change very quickly and Mowbray has outlined the key things he needs his players to do in order to fight for promotion until the end of the season

However, they are just one of a number of play-off contenders eyeing a place in the semi-finals with an exciting trip to Wembley in mind. West Brom have a dismal play-off record, though. That said, Armstrong is just one of many who can stake a claim as one of the best players in the Championship

He was asked for his thoughts on the move back down to the Championship from the Premier League in the matchday programme against Sunderland ahead of the closing stages of the Championship play-off race.

He said: “For me, it was all about playing games. I’ve always said, since the start of my career, that I want to play as many games as I can before I finish

“This opportunity at Albion came about and I grabbed it with both hands. Working with the gaffer here before played a massive part and I just wanted to enjoy my football.

“That was the biggest thing and I see it as another opportunity to try and get back to the Premier League, but with Albion this time.

“We’ve got a great squad and I don’t see why we can’t stay in the position we are.”

West Brom weren’t the only side in the race for Armstrong, but Middlesbrough and Michael Carrick opted for Kelechi Iheanacho instead, as we exclusively revealed.

West Brom’s play-off chances take major hit

The Baggies will hope for a Shilen Patel cash injection this summer amid financial worries, irrespective of whether they gain promotion or not. They will also look to retain Tom Fellows amid an EFL Analysis exclusive regarding his future.

However, their form has been middling for some time now. West Brom won five and drew one of their first six league outings this season. Since then, they have mid-table form in the Championship and are nothing like a play-off side despite having a strong squad that boasts plenty of players in a combined XI with Sunderland.

That said, they have numerous forwards who are capable of being a big differential in the final third. If Mowbray can get them clicking, especially Armstrong, then they could still have a part to play before all is said and done.

Mowbray has worked with Armstrong at Coventry City and Blackburn Rovers previously, and is the right manager to get plenty out of him between now and May. You wouldn’t be that surprised, therefore, if they turned things around.
