This summer is a difficult one for Southampton as they prepare for life as a Championship side for the second time in three seasons.
The appointment of Will Still was a good one, but the Saints need to find a way to recover after coming close to breaking Derby County’s record low points tally in the Premier League in 2024/25.
It’s a moment of recovery for many at St. Mary’s, including Mateus Fernandes who wants to ‘forget about football’ until he returns for pre-season. However, new signings are still needed for Southampton.
But there are also plenty of players in the ranks who will believe they should be playing in a top flight division, including the Saints’ first-choice goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale.

Aaron Ramsdale could be loaned out by Southampton
The 27-year-old has missed out on the England squad on multiple occasions now, and he will be keen to leave Southampton soon. He may now get his wish.

According to talkSPORT, Still will allow Ramsdale to leave the club this summer on loan to clubs in Europe. Galatasaray and Rangers are both interested, while our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, has told EFL Analysis that Ligue Un side Monaco are also targeting the shot-stopper.
Premier League sides AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United are also monitoring the situation at St. Mary’s with the former Arsenal man wanting to earn a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad if England do qualify for the World Cup in 2026.
Aaron Ramsdale’s wages are a huge problem
The biggest issue that Southampton have with Ramsdale is the fact that his wages are so high, with the Hampshire outfit paying in excess of £100,000-a-week to the goalkeeper.
Ramsdale is the best paid player in the Championship, according to Capology.com, and clearing that substantial loss is a priority for Still.

There is no denying that the Saints would have to find a replacement for their number one with Gavin Bazunu and Alex McCarthy their current options.
But by only loaning out last season’s first choice shot-stopper, there may be a plan to get him back involved if they are promoted straight back to the Premier League.
