Wrexham are one of the most financially ambitious clubs in the EFL at the moment, and the capture of a Championship talent would be further proof of that.

Wrexham made history with successive promotions last season, and the Red Dragons have shown their intent at doing the unthinkable next term with their summer transfer window business.

The Red Dragons have completed some impressive deals this summer, namely with Wrexham signing Josh Windass after his Sheffield Wednesday exit.

Recently, Wrexham have been in talks with Kieffer Moore over a deal for the prolific Sheffield United striker and 49-capped Welsh international.

Now, Phil Parkinson and the Red Dragons’ recruitment team have eyed another Championship star as a transfer target, in a deal which would smash Wrexham’s record transfer fee.

Wrexham to smash record transfer fee to sign Ipswich Town forward Nathan Broadhead

The Red Dragons are poised to possess one of the most dangerous attacking trios in the 2025/26 Championship season, with Windass operating in the number ten role behind Ryan Hardie and Sam Smith.

Wrexham signed Hardie from Plymouth Argyle earlier this window in their first statement summer signing, who will feature alongside previous club-record signing Sam Smith.

Last week, the Welsh giants broke that record to sign defender Liberato Cacace. This was then surpassed by the arrival of former Swansea City midfielder Lewis O’Brien, who was signed for £5m from Nottingham Forest last week.

Now, Wrexham are set to smash their transfer fee record for the third time this summer, as the club target Ipswich Town forward Nathan Broadhead.

Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph said on X: “Wrexham have made an approach for Ipswich Town for forward Nathan Broadhead.

“It’s understood Wrexham are prepared to pay £7m for the Wales international, which would smash their record fee. Ipswich have no intention of selling Broadhead this summer.”

Broadhead featured 18 times last season for Ipswich, scoring only two goals in the top flight under Kieran McKenna.

With Ipswich reportedly having “no intention to sell Broadhead this summer” ahead of the upcoming second tier season, the deal is seemingly impossible to pull off.

Regardless, recruiting the Welshman would be another impressive bit of business from Wrexham.

Nathan Broadhead’s career path ahead of Wrexham move

Broadhead began his career in the Everton youth ranks, with his first EFL loan spell coming in League One with Burton Albion.

The Welshman’s breakout campaign in the third tier came on loan at Sunderland in the 2021/22 League One season, in which he scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for the Black Cats.

His former Sunderland boss, Lee Johnson, told ChronicleLive of Broadhead in 2021: “I thought he was fantastic. He never loses heart when he doesn’t get the ball.

“He’s not one of those strikers who makes ten runs and then stops because the ball isn’t coming.

“He keeps on presenting himself, either to be put in behind or with the ball to feet.”

After a lacklustre loan with Wigan Athletic, Broadhead was signed by the Tractor Boys in January 2023 for £1.5m, and he has since gone on to score 23 goals and register 9 assists in 83 Ipswich outings.

With Broadhead capable of operating as a left-winger, striker, and as a number ten, the 27-year-old’s arrival would offer Parkinson great depth and flexibility within his forward ranks.
