Former Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers once spoke about replacing Jamie Vardy, and his words still ring true.
The news today broke that Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy will leave the club at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Vardy has been a hero for Leicester City, but has left the club following their second relegation in three years as the Foxes drop down to the Championship under the stewardship of Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
It is certainly a departure from the club that Leicester fans will be hurt by, and with very good reason, considering the silverware and bags of goals that Vardy brought to the side.
Leicester will surely work tirelessly to replace their veteran goalscorer, but the words of former Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers suggest that it will be a very difficult task.

Former Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers on the difficulty of replacing Jamie Vardy
It is no surprise that the Foxes will find it difficult to replace the man who bagged a total of 143 Premier League goals.
There has almost felt like a sense of inevitability with Vardy’s departure at the club, but it is extra sour knowing that the Foxes will have to face a Championship season without the man who crucially bagged 18 in the promotion-winning campaign under Enzo Maresca.
This inevitability has circled the air of the King Power Stadium throughout the 2020s, with Brendan Rodgers being questioned about the striker’s future at the club back in 2021. The former Foxes boss put his feelings on Vardy perfectly as, per Goal, Rodgers said: “For me he is irreplaceable. You cannot find anyone there. It is so unique, his story, his qualities and what he has given to Leicester.
“For us, it’s more about the actual profile of what we want. I’ll always look to have speed at the top of the field, but are there other attributes that we would look for?
“But to try to replace him – it’s impossible.”

Leicester will face huge difficulty replacing Jamie Vardy
There are several strikers that could replace Vardy at Leicester City, but none will certainly live up to his impact, especially with the pool of players being limited because of the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship.
Such a replacement will be crucial because of Patson Daka’s lack of guaranteed goals in the Championship, let alone the Premier League, and the board will have to work proactively to ensure they have sufficient firepower ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.
Despite Vardy’s tenure at the club ending with relegation back to the Championship, nothing takes away from the fact that he has arguably been the best player ever to serve the club on a long-term basis, bringing a Premier League title to the land in the most unlikely circumstances.
