Chris Wilder must accept defeat with Tom Cannon at Sheffield United after another blank

Chris Wilder did not get the fairy tale return to Sheffield United that he had been dreaming of, as Charlton Athletic left it late to take all three points at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Isaac Olaofe’s 90th minute winner sent the away end into raptures in S2, sinking the Blades to a sixth successive league defeat, and a seventh in all competitions to start the 2025/26 campaign.

Wilder has made changes to his backroom staff, and despite a full week of training, they were unable to inspire the South Yorkshire outfit to victory at home.

Once again, Sheffield United struggled to be clinical, and January may be the right time to help find Tom Cannon a new temporary home after a difficult start to life at the club.

Tom Cannon struggles once again for Sheffield United vs Charlton Athletic

Cannon did not make much of an impact last season following his move to the Blades, as he left Leicester City for a fee that BBC Sport reported to be around the £10m mark.

He scored just once for the team last season, firing the ball into the back of the net against Burnley. However, since then, he has found it tough in the final third and his game time has been more and more limited.

He played just 17 minutes for Sheffield United in their defeat to Charlton at the weekend, making it the fourth time this season that he has been brought off the bench onto the pitch, starting only twice.

Cannon failed to have a shot, had just five touches of the ball, and won just 50% of his duels. The 22-year-old found it difficult to get into the game and establish himself as a difference maker.

The Blades have a decision to make in January

Sheffield United put a lot of faith in the striker when they made the eight-figure move for him in the winter transfer window, but it has not paid off.

Preston North End were interested in Cannon in the summer, but a deal never came to fruition and it’ll be a few months until they can pursue the former Everton man once again.

However, with United currently in the relegation fight, loaning to another club at the bottom of the table is not an option, and they find it tough to get their forward the game time he needs.

Nonetheless, there is still plenty of time for Cannon to make his mark at Bramall Lane and prove that he is the man to lead the Blades to success once again.
