Fans from both sides probably couldn’t believe what they were seeing at the CBS Arena on Saturday afternoon as Coventry City demolished QPR, but we really shouldn’t be surprised.
Coventry went into the weekend in high spirits after last weekend’s 5-3 win away at Derby County, and were also celebrating securing ownership of their stadium for the first time since it opened 20 years ago.
There could be no better way to crown that monumental development than to bag a huge win in front of the home crowd on Saturday, and the players more than delivered on that front.
QPR may have been poor, but we cannot take away from how prolific and dominant Frank Lampard’s side were on the day. But that’s not even the main weapon in their arsenal this season.

Coventry City have momentum and consistency on their side
We knew before the game that Coventry City were favourites to win against QPR. And yes, they went above and beyond and put QPR to the sword with seven goals to record their biggest ever league win (a 6-0 win against Macclesfield in League One in 2016 comes close).
Obviously, the Sky Blues will come away from this game full of confidence and with a very healthy goal difference, the main takeaway from this weekend is that Coventry and Lampard are more than equipped to not only match what they achieved last season, but potentially even go one better.
It’s important to remember that the one thing Coventry have on their side this season is the element of momentum and consistency. Lampard has been in charge for nine months now, and is deep into his second transfer window with the Sky Blues.
That time has been spent wisely to both shape the squad in the way he wants in terms of personnel, and to also instil his beliefs and playing style on the players. It’s that sense of continuity that puts Coventry ahead of so many teams in the division.
This summer alone we saw the likes of Sheffield United, Southampton, Leicester City, Norwich City, and Middlesbrough all change their manager. The amount of time it takes for a new manager to establish what they want at a club cannot be overstated, as the Blades and the Canaries are finding out already.
The same goes for players, too. Many of the top teams in the division have lost key players like Vini Souza, Jamie Vardy, and Borja Sainz, while Coventry have so far maintained the core spine of their squad.
With many of their Championship rivals having to find their feet this season, Coventry are accelerating in the right direction rapidly, and this rampant result against QPR is merely proof of the importance of continuity at this level.

The next week of the transfer window will be key for Coventry City
Obviously, there is still plenty of time for all that to change. With just over a week of the transfer window to go, Coventry will still be fearful of losing Jack Rudoni, Bobby Thomas, and maybe even Haji Wright.
Losing any one of them would be a blow, while losing all three would be a disaster for the Sky Blues at this stage.
Lampard has been very clear about his intentions to keep the squad together, particularly Rudoni, whom he sees as key to his plans for the season. Rudoni himself wants to stay at Coventry, which is a huge signal of just how much potential the team has, but we’ll have to see if Premier League interest changes that before September 1st.
There’s plenty of interest in Bobby Thomas, including from Sheffield United and Premier League clubs like Burnley and Brentford.
If Coventry can resist those temptations, and perhaps even give Lampard one or two more new signings in the process, we could be seeing a genuine contender for the automatic promotion spots in the making.
