Coventry City could be dealt a major transfer blow between now and transfer deadline day.

Coventry City beat Derby County 5-3 at the weekend to earn their first victory of the Championship season in style.

The eight-goal thriller was one of Frank Lampard’s “favourite games” as Sky Blues manager in a comeback win which ought to have filled him with pride.

Despite transfer speculation over his future, Jack Rudoni started the clash before reports emerged that Rudoni had made it “clear” he wants to stay at Coventry for this season at least in a major boost for Lampard.

Unfortunately for the Sky Blues boss, a different crucial Coventry star is now the subject of rife transfer interest, with two Premier League sides registering their interest.

Brentford and Burnley eye moves for Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas

Amid the Blades’ lacklustre start to the season, with defensive frailties glaringly obvious under Ruben Selles, it was reported that Sheffield United made an £8m bid for Bobby Thomas in a swoop for the Coventry defender.

Thomas arrived at the CBS Arena under the stewardship of Mark Robins in the summer of 2023 and has since gone on to make 97 appearances in the heart of the Sky Blues’ defence.

Englishman Thomas has been equally as impressive since Lampard took over at Coventry, and has played the full 90 minutes in both Championship games so far this term.

Now, a further update has emerged on the interest surrounding Thomas, with Premier League sides Brentford and newly promoted Burnley weighing up moves for the 24-year-old.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed on X: “Brentford and Burnley are now considering moves to rival Sheffield United for Coventry defender Bobby Thomas.”

A move to Burnley would see Thomas return to his boyhood club, where he made only one appearance ahead of loan stints at Barrow, Bristol Rovers, and Barnsley before his permanent exit from Turf Moor to Coventry two years ago.

Following reports about Sheffield United’s interest in Thomas, Lampard remained tight-lipped over the links.

What Frank Lampard said about Bobby Thomas amid transfer interest

Following the Derby win, as quoted by Coventry Live, the Sky Blues boss gave very little away regarding Thomas’ uncertain future.

When asked about the Blades’ £8m bid, Lampard said: “I’ve got no comment on that.”, and when probed if he could confirm or deny the interest, he simply stated “No.”

He added: “We need centre halves and we need centre halves to come in, for sure. And at the moment we have Joel (Latibeaudiere) who’s not fit and Bidders (Jake Bidwell) there, who can and has done the job.

“Of course we know we’ve got Bobby (Thomas) and Kitch (Liam Kitching). We know what we need; I certainly know what we need and that’s fine.

“It’s the early part of the season and we’ve got time left in the window, so that’s all to say.”

Thomas scored five goals for the Sky Blues last season while remaining rock-solid at the back, and Lampard will be desperate to retain his presence in both boxes beyond the summer transfer window deadline.
