Five candidates to become the next Sheffield Wednesday manager if Danny Rohl jumps ship this summer

Sheffield Wednesday could be set for a turbulent summer, and Danny Rohl sounds like he’s ready to leave, but who would replace him?

The Owls enjoyed a promising run of form in the middle of the campaign to be within touching distance of the Championship play-offs, but have ultimately fallen short this year.

Danny Rohl’s fine work at Hillsborough has not gone unnoticed, though, with the Sheffield Wednesday manager on the radar for Southampton and Leicester, while RB Leipzig are also keen.

Wednesday fans like the idea of Henrik Pedersen and Chris Powell sticking around if Rohl does move on this summer as expected, but there are other options.

With potential new investors looking at Sheffield Wednesday, there could be a very exciting project arising from the ashes of Rohl’s exit, so here are five names that could take the throne at Hillsborough.

Who could replace Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday?

Dave Challinor

OK, we’ll start with a fairly feasible option, in Stockport County manager Dave Challinor. The only issue for this option would be prising him away from his job there.

Challinor’s impressive managerial record speaks for itself, with him never having finished below the play-off places in any of his roles.

He’s currently got Stockport in the League One play-offs as we speak, so if he can secure yet another promotion there’s no way he’d be leaving. But, if he fails, there’s a chance Wednesday could snap up one of the EFL’s most underrated managers.

Raphael Wicky

Raphael Wicky was recently linked with Norwich, but it seems the Canaries are putting their chips on Jack Wilshere now. Still, we know Wicky is keen on managing in England, and he is very much from the same school of thought as Danny Rohl.

He’s flexible with his tactics to suit the situation at hand, a great man-manager, and demands hard work and exciting football from his players. Sounds right up Wednesday’s street.

Gary O’Neil

If that proposed takeover does come to fruition for the Owls, they’ll want a big name in the dugout, and Gary O’Neil is a person of interest for plenty of clubs looking for a new manager already.

Whether O’Neil would be up for the drop down to the Championship remains to be seen, but as a relatively young manager, the prospect of taking on the challenge in S6, with a bit of financial backing, could be just what he needs to get his career back on track after what happened at Wolves.

Rob Edwards

Another young manager looking to restore his reputation in the game is Rob Edwards, who enjoyed the highs of taking Luton Town to the Premier League, before struggling massively this season when back in the second tier.

Like Rohl, Edwards has proven he can get the best out of a modest bunch of players through hard work and passion. He also preferred the 3-4-2-1 formation, which is very similar to how Rohl has got the Owls operating at the moment, so the transition would be fairly smooth, you’d hope.

David Hubert

We know Dejphon Chansiri has made left-field decisions in his time, and there’s no reason to suggest he won’t make another one this summer if he has to replace Danny Rohl. For that reason, we’ve added the highly-rated but relatively inexperienced David Hubert to this list.

Tactically, Hubert likes to use a 4-2-3-1, which again would be close enough to Rohl’s current system so as not to rock the boat. The 37-year-old has done fine work at Anderlecht over in Belgium over the years, working his way up from youth team assistant to taking on the top job there.

He’s a free agent now after being moved on in March, but Hubert will definitely be back in the game and an opportunity to prove himself in England could be huge. It would be a risk for Wednesday, but Hubert has massive potential, and has a keen eye for identifying young talent, too.
