The chaos continues at Sheffield Wednesday, but the Owls could steady the ship a little bit by actually making some signings, and the PFA free agent squad is the perfect place to shop.
There’s never a dull moment around Sheffield Wednesday, much to the dismay of the long-suffering fanbase.
This week’s big story has been the departure of Danny Rohl. Despite us knowing Owls chiefs had made the decision almost two weeks ago, complications arose delaying the inevitable.
We’re led to believe Rohl’s assistant, Henrik Pedersen will step in as manager for the 2025/26 season. But, with a paper-thin squad and a transfer ban, he’s going to have to be smart in recruiting new players.
Free agents are the order of the day, then, and thanks to the PFA’s innovative training camp through the summer, the Owls can have a look at some of the best talent still on offer; like these three options below.

PFA free agent squad has three top targets for Sheffield Wednesday
Patrick Bauer
Admittedly, it’s slim pickings for Championship clubs among the PFA squad, but one player who does stand out is Patrick Bauer.
The big centre-half was turning out for Preston North End last season, and it’s thought the likes of Coventry City and Derby County have been looking at him this summer.
Wednesday aren’t short of options at centre-back, but signing the experienced German would really help to at least give them a solid backline; something they’re likely to desperately need this season.
Adam Reach
Ask any Sheffield Wednesday fan to name their top five goals of the past couple of decades and you’re likely to hear Adam Reach’s name mentioned a lot.
The 32-year-old scored some screamers during his five-year stint in S6, and he would be welcomed back with open arms right now.
With the likes of Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba leaving, the Owls need wide players and Reach fits the bill perfectly.
Ryan Tunnicliffe
Believe it or not, Sheffield Wednesday could sign a player who has a Premier League medal if they wanted to right now. Ryan Tunnicliffe was previously at Manchester United as a youngster, but has had a turbulent career since then.
In particular, Tunnicliffe had a torrid time in Australia where he was essentially forced out of Adelaide. Now, he’s ready for a return to the EFL.
Bringing experience, physicality, and a bit of bite to the midfield could be really useful for Wednesday, especially amid the uncertainty over Barry Bannan’s contract.

Sheffield Wednesday should still be dreaming about Jamie Vardy signing
There is still one top Championship free agent waiting to decide on his next move: Jamie Vardy.
While there is interest from abroad and some of the bigger clubs in the Championship, we’ve always insisted Vardy could still sign for Sheffield Wednesday.
It’s a long shot, especially given the Owls can’t offer more than £7,000 per week in wages at the moment, but there’s no denying that Vardy would at least be tempted by the idea of returning to his boyhood club and being the hero to save them from this mess.
We’ll not hold our breath on this one, but while ever he is still a free agent, Wednesday have a chance.
