Hull City chief Acun Ilicali must already be wary of one key summer predicament looming over his head

Acun Ilicali will be left with one issue this summer as unwanted Hull City man returns from loan spell.

Hull City confirmed survival in the Championship this weekend after Ruben Selles’ side notched a draw away at Portsmouth.

Despite going into the final day of the 2024/25 Championship campaign in the bottom three, Hull City battled for a point at Fratton Park, which proved to be enough top keep them in the division after Luton Town suffered a 5-3 defeat at West Brom, meaning that the Hatters suffered a drop down to League One.

The fact that Hull were involved in a relegation scrap in the first place, just 12 months after a push for the play-offs, ultimately came down to a poor summer of decision-making by the higher-ups at the club, which involved Acun Ilicali sacking Liam Rosenior, and then replacing him with Tim Walter.

Other issues stem from the recruitment in the summer, including the deal to permanently sign one player who was then sent out on loan; he is now set to return to the club, something that will create a predicament for Ilicali.

Hull City must work out what to do with returning defender Ryan Giles following Middlesbrough spell

In the January transfer window, Hull City decided to sanction the loan of Ryan Giles to Middlesbrough, a decision that stemmed from his difficult spell at the MKM Stadium, which ultimately came from the question marks surrounding his defensive ability.

It was hoped that the defender would be rejuvenated after a spell at Middlesbrough, where he would either notch significant game time, develop consistency, and stay with the Teeside club, and Hull could fetch a fee for the defender, or that he could return to the club, having developed as a player. Unfortunately, neither has happened.

Giles hasn’t received a single appearance for Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough since he was replaced at half-time in a 1-0 defeat to Swansea City at the beginning of March.

With Giles returning, both Ilicali and Selles will be left with a key decision of whether he will still have a future at the club.

Ruben Selles could help Ryan Giles rejuvenate form with The Tigers

There are very few doubts over the attacking strengths that Giles carries in his locker, as shown extensively during his time his first stin at Middlesbrough in the 2022/23 campaign, where he accumulated 11 assists in a Championship season.

Giles can be a decent asset for Hull City, providing that he can rediscover his attacking touch that helped Middlesbrough two years ago, but his real issue lies within his defensive work.

Thankfully, Selles is a safe pair of hands to help develop Giles’ defensive work, as shown by the fact that he was able to make this current Hull City side very strong at the back.

Whilst Giles won’t have many chances to turn around his Hull career, he still has shown previously to be a decent asset at a Championship club, and Selles should be givemn the opportunity to test out the full-back.
