Liam Manning has one piece of business to complete this summer that can save Norwich City £1.82m

It’s been an impressive and highly effective summer for Norwich City so far, but Liam Manning still needs to move one player on to really get his squad in shape ahead of the new season.

The Norwich City board have backed their new manager with plenty of new signings coming through the door at Carrow Road.

Liam Manning now has a squad capable of challenging for promotion, with the likes of Mathias Kvistgaarden, Jacob Wright, and Harry Darling among the best signings in the Championship this summer.

However, the Canaries do still have some deadwood on the peripheries of the first team, and Manning will be eager to clear the decks before the transfer deadline.

Shane Duffy has to leave Norwich City

Veteran centre-half Shane Duffy was left out of Norwich’s 2-0 win over NAC Breda on Saturday, with Manning offering an explanation as to why that was (via the Pink’Un).

Manning claimed Duffy was absent purely because of competition for places in the team, with Darling and Jakov Medic preferred in the middle of defence.

That’s a fair reason, but the Canaries boss also said “there’s the possibility” of Duffy being moved on this summer without elaborating too much on that point.

Regardless, the fact that Duffy has fallen down the pecking order so much is a clear indication that he is nothing more than squad depth at this point, and very expensive squad depth, at that.

Duffy is thought to earn around £35,000 per week (or £1.82m per year) with a contract ending a year from now. He’s the top earner in the Norwich squad, and those wages would go a long way towards funding Manning’s other plans for the Canaries.

Can Norwich City keep Josh Sargent?

While Manning and Norwich will be eager to get Duffy out of the door, the Canaries will be desperate to keep Josh Sargent.

Top flight links for Sargent have died off of late, with Burnley now appearing to be signing Armando Broja instead.

More recently, a move to Germany fell through with Sargent rejecting Wolfsburg. It’s thought Norwich will want £18m for Sargent, but they’re not exactly in a position where they need to sell their star man given he’s contracted until 2028.

If they can keep Sargent, Norwich would be almost nailed on to get promoted in 2025/26, and that must surely be on the minds of the Carrow Road hierarchy, Manning, and even Sargent himself.
