Norwich City are set to sign ‘excellent’ top flight star in £3m deal as Pelle Mattsson update emerges

Norwich City have been making waves in the summer transfer window, and Liam Manning is now poised to continue that impressive business.

Since Norwich City appointed Liam Manning this summer, the Canaries have enjoyed one of the best summer transfer windows of any Championship club.

Despite Norwich losing Borja Sainz to Porto, the window has been an unmitigated success for the Canaries, following the arrivals of Mathias Kvistgaarden, Papa Diallo, and Jeffrey Schlupp, to name just three.

As well as Sainz, Norwich looked set to lose their star striker this summer, but Josh Sargent’s failed move to Hoffenheim has kept him at Carrow Road, for the time being.

Now, Manning is poised to make his tenth summer signing at Norwich, with a £3m deal struck for a Portuguese top flight midfield talent.

Norwich City agree £3m deal for Famalicao midfielder Mirko Topic

The Canaries have been in the market for a central midfielder this summer, and Pelle Mattsson was thought to be Norwich’s top target.

Mattsson’s Norwich transfer saga continued this week, amid reports claiming that a £2.6m deal had been agreed for the Danish midfielder with Silkeborg.

However, it has now emerged that the deal for Mattsson is ‘dead’ after Norwich have agreed a deal with Portuguese top flight side Famalicao for Serbian midfielder Mirko Topic.

As first reported by Serbian outlet Mozzart Sport, Norwich have agreed a £3m/€3.5m deal for Topic, with the potential for another €500k/£430k in add-ons.

Reporter Connor Southwell of the Pink Un added that the move for Mattsson is “considered dead”, with Topic emerging as the Canaries’ “top target” in the central midfield position within the last 48 hours.

Topic featured 33 times in the Portuguese top flight last season for Famalicao, scoring one goal, and Norwich fans ought to be excited about his imminent arrival after the 24-year-old earned rave reviews from a Serbian football expert.

‘Excellent’ Mirko Topic could be last piece of Norwich City puzzle

After Topic emerged as a transfer target for the Canaries this month, EFL Analysis exclusively spoke to Serbian football expert Kristjan Plazonja about what the midfielder will bring to Norwich.

Topic earned rave reviews, as Plazonja told us: “Mirko Topic is a defensive-minded six with excellent reading of the game.

“His high interception-to-tackle ratio reflects how well he anticipates danger. Physically, his long legs give him an edge in 1v1 duels.

“On the ball, he stands out for his composure and press resistance. He’s tidy in possession and offers real security in the build-up phase.

“While he’s a solid passer across the board, his long balls are arguably his standout quality.”

If that expert’s appraisal comes to fruition, Norwich will have signed a player capable of becoming one of the best defensive-minded midfielders in the Championship next season, and one who could be the final piece of the puzzle for Manning’s top-six finish quest.
