Swansea City, with the help of Luka Modric, could sanction a return to the club for one former fan favourite who currently finds himself as a free agent.

Swansea City have heavily recruited this summer, as the owners looked to back boss Alan Sheehan.

Among the deals, Swansea City made the notable signing of Adam Idah from Celtic, while also making a move for Swedish talent Zeidane Inoussa.

Ahead of this summer, there was plenty of optimism over whether co-owner Luka Modric, the Real Madrid Ballon d’Or winner, could influence signings, helping the club bring a higher calibre of talent through the doors.

The summer window is now over, but Swansea City could still find themselves sniffing around for free agents, with one former star still available to be picked up.

Luka Modric could sanction Jonjo Shelvey return to Swansea City

It has been revealed by transfer guru Ben Jacobs that Swansea City and Luka Modric are keen to delve into the free agent market.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jacobs said: “I think Swansea City is going to be really interesting because Luka Modrić is now part of that ownership group, and from what I’m told, he is having conversations with slightly older players and free agents to try and lure them over there.”

While Modric is scouring the earth for possible free agents, there is every chance he may come past former Swan Jonjo Shelvey, who is still available for transfer.

Shelvey trained with Championship rivals Hull City this summer, but the Tigers opted against signing the former England international.

During his time at Swansea City, Shelvey managed 96 appearances, where he scored 10 and assisted 16.

With 278 appearances at Premier League level for Liverpool, Newcastle United, and of course Swansea City, he could be a reliable pick-up for Alan Sheehan’s side.

Jonjo Shelvey’s experience could benefit Swansea City

According to Transfermarkt, which has accumulated the ages of each player that has played for each Championship club, Swansea City have the 6th youngest squad that has been utilised so far in the 2025/26 season.

Swansea City’s average age so far this season works out at just 24.7, which points towards the potential need for more experience in the ranks.

If the Swans were to sign Jonjo Shelvey, there would be no expectation for him to slot into the starting 11, but just having him around the dressing room will be highly beneficial for Alan Sheehan’s side.

With Shelvey showing a clear ambition to return to the Championship, Swansea could surely benefit by bringing him back into the fold to help the younger crop of players who may need guidance in the second tier from an experienced head.
