Huddersfield Town are frontrunners for the League One title this season, and Sunderland academy graduate Lynden Gooch will have a big part to play.

Ahead of the 2025/26 League One campaign, Huddersfield Town have emerged as one of the early candidates for success next season.

Huddersfield appointed Lee Grant as the club’s new manager, and he has wasted no time during his first months in charge by overseeing some impressive transfer business.

So far in the summer transfer window, new Terriers boss Grant made Ryan Ledson his first signing, who was followed by Marcus Harness, Joe Low, and Sean Roughan.

However, Huddersfield’s latest acquisition in the form of Sunderland academy graduate Lynden Gooch could prove to be the third tier’s signing of the summer. Here, EFL Analysis delves into why.

Three reasons why Lynden Gooch can push Huddersfield Town to League One title

This week, Gooch joined Grant’s Huddersfield revolution after becoming a Championship free agent upon the expiry of his Stoke City contract.

After a two-season stint with the Potters in which he couldn’t rediscover his best form from his Black Cats time, the California-born player has joined the Terriers as the latest addition in Huddersfield’s signings this summer.

EFL Analysis has outlined three key benefits Gooch will bring to Grant’s side and Huddersfield’s promotion push.

Versatility in several key positions

Since his senior breakthrough at Sunderland in the Black Cats 2016/17 Premier League campaign, Gooch has proven himself as a capable operator in a handful of positions.

During his early football, Gooch was deployed as a right-winger, whilst also performing well cutting in from the left, and in the pocket behind the striker as a ’10’.

As his career progressed at Sunderland and Gooch aged, his versatility and adaptability saw him feature on either side of full-back, employing his attacking prowess and physical attributes exceptionally well.

With an arduous 46-game season ahead for Grant and Huddersfield, Gooch’s versatility will be imperative to cover potential injuries and suspensions.

Experience in important games for Sunderland

Not only does Gooch bring immense versatility, his experience at Premier League level will be a major benefit at Huddersfield.

Gooch has 247 Sunderland career appearances to his name, with 11 of those coming in the top flight, 105 in the Championship, and 155 in League One.

The American adopted Mackem also won the 2021 Papa John’s Trophy for the Black Cats, dispatching an Aiden McGeady pass in emphatic style to win some long-awaited silverware for Sunderland.

Gooch was also part of the 2021/22 Sunderland squad that won the League One play-off final under now-Millwall boss Alex Neil, and his winning experience will be a monumental benefit as Huddersfield look to return to the second tier after relegation in 2024.

Impressive mentality throughout career

Throughout his Sunderland career, Gooch was praised by all of the head coaches who took the reins at the Stadium of Light.

Under current Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson, Gooch enjoyed his most productive season in front of goal for the Black Cats, scoring ten goals and assisting twice in 30 outings during their 2019/20 League One season.

After a stunning strike against MK Dons, Parkinson told the Shields Gazette of Gooch: “It is a moment of real quality from Lynden.

“He is a very good player, and he has to keep taking his game to the next level each week, and that goal was a moment of immense quality.”

Following Parkinson’s departure, Gooch once again proved himself in a different position under a plethora of different Sunderland managers, showing great determination to maintain his role in the side for multiple seasons before he emotionally departed the club he came to as a boy from California.

Sunderland fans will agree with Lee Grant’s opinion of Lynden Gooch

After Gooch arrived at Huddersfield, Grant told Huddersfield’s website: “His experience will be invaluable both on and off the pitch for the group, and he’s another player who knows how it feels to not only be promoted from this league, but the hard work and dedication it requires to get there.

“A tenacious character, he’ll be a player our supporters enjoy watching represent them, too.”

Sunderland fans will wholeheartedly agree with Grant’s appraisal of the American, with his experience being a major benefit to the Terriers.

At the same time, his selfless attitude and commitment are something every team needs, and Gooch embodies that every time he steps out onto the field.

EFL Analysis predict that Huddersfield will win League One this season, and the abilities both on and off the field that Gooch brings with him will be an unequivocal benefit in the Terriers’ promotion aim.
