Marti Cifuentes’ history suggests that he could be prepared to walk away from Queens Park Rangers this summer.

Reports have claimed that Cifuentes has been linked to the West Bromwich Albion job – days after Tony Mowbray was dismissed.

Ryan Mason is another name linked with West Brom as the Baggies prepare for a summer upheaval in response to just missing out on a top-six Championship finish.

The Spaniard appears to be in pole position for the role at the Hawthorns and it would be a big blow to QPR, who won’t want to lose him.

QPR may be worried though, especially given his previous record.

Why did Marti Cifuentes leave previous job before QPR?

Cifuentes was appointed by the West London in October 2023, joining from Swedish giants Hammarby.

He was able to keep QPR up last season and looks set to guide them to another mid-table finish.

However, several reports have claimed that Cifuentes is having issues with the hierarchy at his current club, which is eerily similar to his situation at Hammarby.

In November 2024, Fotbollskanalen‘s podcast Lundh spoke to a former colleague Jesper Jansson about the real reason why he the Swedish club.

He said: “Marti wasn’t entirely on board with the club’s strategy.

“They didn’t become them (the players he wanted) . Now they are pushing on in an incredibly good way, a lot more players. Yes, [Cifuentes wasn’t impressed] not quite in the same way.”

Clubs thrive when the manager and hierarchy align together. When they don’t, it all falls apart.

Although Cifuentes hasn’t directly addressed the rumours suggesting he could be joining league rivals West Brom, the 42-year-old told BBC Radio London that he would be sitting down to discuss his future.

“For me, it’s very natural to sit with the owners, the CEO in that case, to do a balance – as I will do with my players, as I will do with my staff,” he said.

“So in this moment I think this is when you have to review the things that have gone well, the things that might be improved, and then align for what’s next.”
