With Middlesbrough still keen to add a new forward to their squad before the summer transfer window concludes, Rob Edwards could bring a former Boro star back to the Riverside on a free.
Middlesbrough have enjoyed a positive start to the 2025/26 Championship season under the stewardship of Rob Edwards.
With three wins on the spin, Boro will be hoping to capitalise on their bright start to the season by adding extra quality in the remaining time of the summer transfer window.
The exciting signing of Sverre Nypan from Man City on loan has already got Middlesbrough supporters off their seats, and they could add a striker to their squad.
Middlesbrough are reportedly close to signing Kaly Sene, but such a deal is yet to be concluded.
Edwards will be keen to ensure he has extra depth in the final third, and one quick solution could see him turn to one former Middlesbrough star, but such a deal would potentially divide opinion.

Rob Edwards could turn to Patrick Bamford to solve Middlesbrough’s attacking woes
Middlesbrough’s attacking options this season are rather limited, which is why they have turned towards the transfer window to solve their key issue.
Whilst Boro may be keen to splash money on an exciting talent to spearhead Rob Edwards’ side, it is worth considering a return for Patrick Bamford following his Leeds United departure.
Bamford was surplus to requirements during Leeds United’s title-winning 2024/25 season, having only played 235 minutes of Championship football.
The season before, however, saw Bamford bag eight goals in 33 appearances at Championship level.
Bamford has previously shone at the Riverside Stadium, notably in the 2014/15 season, where he bagged 17 league goals. He has a proven record in the Championship and was a popular figure in Middlesbrough before his move to Leeds United.

Why Boro fans may not favour a Patrick Bamford return
Middlesbrough supporters will have fond memories of Bamford leading the line, but there would also be a lingering concern about the limited role he played for Leeds United in the 2024/25 season, which could make him rather rusty.
Rob Edwards’ side could do with extra reinforcements up front, but Bamford may require a boost in fitness before he is useful at Championship level.
Middlesbrough fans will also hope that they can aim higher with recruits, and go for someone younger to build a side around.
Bamford is an option that easily could be considered, but fans should not expect him to transform Edwards’ side.
