Sheffield United are managerless for the first time since December 2023, but they are already closing in on the next man to take charge in the dugout at Bramall Lane.
EFL Analysis reported earlier in June that Chris Wilder’s job was under threat, but the decision was taken on Tuesday to sack the 57-year-old, with an official announcement expected soon.
Sheffield United fans were stunned by the club’s decision to get rid of the manager who took the Blades to the Championship play-off final, with Sunderland winning promotion thanks to Tommy Watson’s 95th strike.
However, the South Yorkshire outfit are moving on quickly and Ruben Selles looks as though he will replace Wilder in the coming days. With new signings needed, the Spaniard may already know who his first arrival will be at Bramall Lane.

Ruben Selles should push to sign Charlie Savage for Sheffield United
It’s been a strange seven months for Selles, with the ex-Southampton boss about to head into his third job in that period.

He left League One side Reading for Hull City in December, before Tigers supporters were left angry after he was sacked at the end of the season – despite keeping the club in the Championship on the final day of the campaign.
Nevertheless, with Selles returning to the Championship almost instantly, his first signing should already be decided and he must return to the Royals and bring Charlie Savage to Bramall Lane.
The Wales international had an excellent campaign at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, and he was linked with a move to Sheffield United in January by Caught Offside. However, a deal never came to fruition and the Blades should return with a bid this summer.

Charlie Savage has great memories of Ruben Selles
Reading were bought by Rob Couhig in May, and the Berkshire outfit are now looking upwards after a long period of financial instability.
However, the allure of playing for a club in Sheffield United, who are targeting the Premier League next season, could be too much for Savage to reject, especially given his past relationship with Selles.

He said about his former manager back in October 2024 (via: BBC Sport): “I had to get out of playing Under-21s football for Manchester United and experience playing men’s football. The learning you get playing for three points every week, you can’t mirror that.
“That learning is essential for any young player. You need games and minutes and to get that, especially under a manager like Rubén Selles, is really good.
“He is a manager who likes developing young players and gives them a chance. He showed that when had a 16-year-old [Andre Garcia] who’s still at school play for us at the weekend; it’s a prime example that he will give you that chance. He wants to develop people’s games, and I’ve really enjoyed playing under him.”
