Sheffield United must end uncertainty and stick with Chris Wilder, the pattern of success is obvious

Following the disappointment of the play-off final defeat to Sunderland, Sheffield United are contemplating the future of head coach Chris Wilder.

With the pain of the play-off final defeat against Sunderland beginning to fade as preparations for next season start, Sheffield United could part ways with Chris Wilder.

Despite finishing on 90 points, ten shy of outliers Leeds United and Burnley, the Blades are contemplating axing Wilder ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

Alan Biggs is “not convinced” by the new owners, the COH Sports group, and such a bold call could make or break next season for the Blades.

Wilder is set for crunch talks over his Sheffield United future this week, after he voiced concerns over summer plans at Sheffield United.

Sacking such a popular figure at Bramall Lane would be a very risky decision, with one key reason emerging.

Why Sheffield United must stick with manager Chris Wilder

Wilder is a born-and-bred Blades supporter, and will forever be held in high regard by the Bramall Lane faithful after masterminding promotion to the Premier League on two occasions during his two stints at his boyhood club.

If Wilder is axed by the Blades hierarchy, the latest reports suggest that Gary O’Neil and Ruben Selles are in line for the Sheffield United job.

However, given the adoration towards Wilder from the Blades, Sheffield United fans are not impressed by the potential Wilder replacements.

Sacking Wilder would be a remarkably short-sighted decision, not only because of his impressive record in the Blades dugout, but when comparing that to the path laid out by Leeds that has come to fruition this season.

After Leeds suffered Championship play-off final despair against Southampton in the 2023/24 campaign, the Elland Road hierarchy stuck with Daniel Farke, rather than pulling the trigger to sack the German head coach despite his promotion failure.

Fast forward 12 months, and Leeds are a Premier League team once again after winning the Championship title with 100 points, cementing Farke as the best Leeds manager ever when ranked by win percentage.

In further historic support for Wilder to stay as Blades boss, Sunderland bounced back from defeat in the “greatest” play-off final ever in 1998 against Charlton, to earn promotion to the Premier League in the subsequent season.

Sheffield United owners must back Chris Wilder in transfer window

So far in the summer transfer window, Sheffield United have been sticking with the data-driven recruitment plan preferred by the new Blades hierarchy, which has seen Sheffield United identify “special” new signing Ehije Ukaki from the Bulgarian top flight.

Sheffield United fans are split on the winger’s arrival from Botev Plovdiv, which is the club’s first summer signing of their AI-data model.

Questions are being asked over the move, given that a similar method was used to sign both Jefferson Caceres and Christian Nwachukwu in January, who have both failed to feature for a single minute at the Blades since joining earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United have been targeting Chris Mepham, but have been told to sign “quality” defender Jimmy Dunne instead after he became a free agent this summer.

A signing of either Mepham or Dunne’s ilk would be far more prudent for Sheffield United’s promotion aspirations next season than unproven, unknown entities from Eastern Europe.

Despite this season ending in disappointment, Wilder has proven he has the skills to take the Blades back to the top flight for the third time, now the Bramall Lane hierarchy must give their manager the right tools to complete that task.
