Sheffield Wednesday expert was left stunned at Dejphon Chansiri decision, it’s even more baffling in hindsight

One Sheffield Wednesday expert couldn’t believe why one player was let go as Championship rivals snap up a bargain.

Sheffield Wednesday have been left in a financial crisis following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Championship season.

As of writing, staff are yet to be paid their salaries for May, with June’s payment set to be due in the not-too-distant future.

Such issues have led to Sheffield Wednesday fans setting up a GoFundMe page to help pay the non-playing staff, some of whom have had to take out ‘emergency funding’ in this situation.

Aside from unpaid wages, recruitment is set to be an issue this summer, which has left Sheffield Wednesday writer Alex Miller stunned that they let go of a prominent member of the first team.

Sheffield Wednesday writer Alex Miller explains the ‘surprise’ behind Pol Valentin decision

Sheffield Wednesday announced their retained list back in May, which saw Stuart Armstrong, Ben Hamer, Ryo Hatsuse, Michael Ihiekwe, Marvin Johnson, Pol Valentin and Mallik Wilks moved on following the conclusion of their contracts at Hillsborough.

Of the players who were let go, Pol Valentin does stand out as a surprise; whilst he wasn’t often playing a prominent role in the starting 11, he provided depth and consistency at Championship level.

It is no surprise to see Valentin snapped up by a fellow Championship side, with him moving to Preston North End.

Giving his expertise to the Lancashire Post, Sheffield Star writer Alex Miller regarded the departure of Valentin as ‘the biggest surprise’ because he wasn’t on a significantly high wage that and Sheffield Wednesday held an option of an extra year on his contract.

Decision to lose Pol Valentin is mind-boggling in hindsight

The situation that Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in right now means that they will only be able to sign any players who don’t include a transfer or loan fee, leaving the options significantly limited.

There must have been some indication that Sheffield Wednesday were set to struggle financially over the summer, so you would think that some thought would have been placed in retaining as many players as possible.

Sheffield Wednesday will no doubt struggle next season, and whilst the decision to let go Valentin will not be make-or-break, it cannot be fathomed why, in their situation, they wouldn’t exercise the year option to either keep him at the club, or at the least, fetch a small fee for him to move elsewhere.
