Sheffield Wednesday made a disastrous £2.5m mistake last summer, Danny Rohl must sell him

It’s been quite the couple of weeks at Sheffield Wednesday, and as the transfer window closes for the first time this summer, the mood has perhaps never quite been so sour in S6.

Dejphon Chansiri looks to have been disowned by John West, and after failing to pay players and staff at Hillsborough in May, the saga seemingly has no end in sight.

Danny Rohl is pushing for his Owls exit, leaving further question marks over who will actually lead the club into the 2025/26 campaign with the South Yorkshire outfit under a transfer embargo.

However, last summer’s transfer window was not exactly as strong as Sheffield Wednesday needed, especially now that they find themselves in their current position, and the club must sell one of those who joined permanently in August 2024.

Sheffield Wednesday made an awful financial decision with Ike Ugbo

The Owls signed Ike Ugbo last summer on a permanent deal after he impressed while on loan throughout the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Star reported that Sheffield Wednesday paid £2.5m to French side Troyes for the services of the striker after scoring seven goals and picking up one assist in 18 Championship games following his original arrival at Hillsborough.

However, last season was nothing short of a disaster for the nine-time capped Canada international as he failed to score a single goal in 34 league appearances.

The move proved to be a disaster for all parties, with Sheffield Wednesday having to rely on Josh Windass, who triggered a one-year contract extension in May, for their goals as Ugbo lost his place in his national team.

Danny Rohl must move Ike Ugbo on this summer

With the Owls under a transfer embargo, they are going to find it difficult to bring in replacements for any departing players but they are in desperate need of raising funds to help pay players.

Ugbo is a player whom they can afford to lose, although it is obvious at this point that they will take a hit on the price that they signed him for, and Rohl must do everything he can to find the forward a move away from Yorkshire this summer.

Keeping hold of the 26-year-old is a risk, and with Bailey Cadamarteri coming through the ranks, there might be a reliance on utilising some of the younger players that Sheffield Wednesday have, with avoiding relegation the sole target for the club next season.
