It’s been a tough summer for Blackburn Rovers, with key stars departing the club, while the start to the season on the pitch did not look overly bright until the weekend.

The Lancashire outfit picked up their first three points of the season on Saturday afternoon in impressive fashion, as they dispatched Hull City in a 3-0 victory at the MKM Stadium.

Valerien Ismael made Todd Cantwell the club captain last week as Lewis Travis closes in on a move to Derby County, and he repaid the faith that his manager has in him with the third goal of the game in East Yorkshire.

Nevertheless, on Sunday it was reported by Alan Nixon that Dominic Hyam has become the subject of interest from Watford, but there is a fresh update from the Blackburn camp that will be good news for those at Ewood Park.

How Dominic Hyam feels about a potential move to Watford from Blackburn Rovers

The centre-back has played every single minute of Rovers’ last 49 Championship games – a run that stretches back to the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

However, Watford are keen on bringing him to Vicarage Road before next Monday’s transfer deadline. Yet, Lancashire Telegraph have reported that a formal bid has not been received by Blackburn yet.

On top of that, Hyam is happy in BB2, and the Hornets’ interest has been prolonged.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, but he has been offered a one-year extension on terms that match his current deal. Hyam is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, although he remains open to signing on with Blackburn if the right offer is put in front of him.

After losing vital players such as Danny Batth, Tyrhys Dolan and Callum Brittain already this summer, Ismael will be keen to ensure that he does not see another key member of his team depart.

Hyam must not be sold, especially given how little time there is left in the window to find a replacement and the Blackburn manager clearly holds the defender in high regard.

When the defender signed a new deal until 2026 in April, Ismael explained just how important he is to the team. He said (via: rovers.co.uk): “I think he’s shown exactly what we expected from a physical side of a player, that ability to go again.

“He’s solid, he’s played every game and stands up even when he gets injured, so it’s good to have that reliability. The physical side is very important because it means they are robust for the Championship and ready to go again.

“He has that consistency to play and a clear profile for a centre-back in being strong in the duels, good on the ball, has that experience and is vocal.”
