Derby County set to spend up to £5m in double swoop of transfer signings this weekend

Derby County are looking set to be busy in the transfer market right up to the deadline of the summer window on September 1 as they look to sign two players by the end of the weekend.

The Rams’ start to the season has not quite lived up to expectations, as they have conceded a combined eight goals in their two Championship fixtures, against Stoke City and Coventry City.

Derby County play Bristol City this weekend, and the stats appear to be on their side, due to the history between the two clubs in this fixture, despite their respective starts to the Championship campaign.

The Rams appear to be suffering an early-season injury crisis, meaning they need bodies through the door at Pride Park, and it looks like they are set to bring two in before their Carabao Cup fixture with Burnley.

Derby County edge closer to signing Lewis Travis and Max Johnston

It appears that a deal has been struck for the Rams to finally acquire a long-term target, Lewis Travis from Blackburn Rovers, as the Lancashire club confirmed his replacement.

Valerien Ismael all but confirmed that Travis had played his final game for Blackburn, as he stated that Todd Cantwell will be remaining as captain of the club.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the third bid from Derby County to Sturm Graz for Max Johnston has had the desired impact, as they are now in talks to sign the full-back, according to journalist Anthony Joseph.

The fees reported on both players combine to make £5 million, which demonstrates the ambition the club have and the faith they are showing in John Eustace, after he kept them in the Championship last season.

There is a belief around the club that should he get a squad to his liking, then he can lead them back to the Premier League, with the Rams looking to get back to the top flight to make up for their performance last time, when they got the lowest points tally ever in 2008.

John Eustace is looking to find form before signings join the club

Derby County are unlikely to confirm the signings of Travis and Johnston before the end of their weekend fixture with Bristol City, and John Eustace is hoping that the new players will enter a club finding form after a win.

Speaking to the Derby media team, he said: “We’ve played two teams who both finished in the play-offs, and our first game against Stoke, they’ve invested well as well, so we’ve been in both games, and we’ve been competitive in both games.

“The Bristol game won’t be any different. They’re coached very well, they’ve got a real set style of play now, and they’ve got a group of players that have been there a long time, so that helps.

“We know it’s going to be a difficult challenge, but one we really can’t wait for now. We want to put a wrong right from Saturday, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
