Coventry City lodge defender bid following Charlie Hughes crossroads as Champions League club make decision

Following the difficulties involved with a deal to sign Charlie Hughes from Hull City, Coventry City have turned towards a centre-back from a Champions League club.

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard is keen to add to his ranks ahead of the summer transfer window slamming shut.

At the top of his priority list is a defender, as has been obvious for the recent weeks of the window.

Coventry City have sent three bids for Hull City’s Charlie Hughes, with the latest stretching to a £10m fee, but all have been unsuccessful.

It is unlikely that Hull City will sell their prized defender due to their current fee restriction, limiting them from reinvesting the fee received immediately back into the squad.

This has led to Coventry City targeting one Champions League defender, and his parent club have already made their stance clear on the bid.

Coventry City have bid rejected for Bodo/Glimt defender Villads Nielsen

It has been revealed, via Pete O’Rourke, that Coventry City launched a bid for Bodo/Glimt defender Villads Nielsen, but it has been rejected.

The Norwegian outfit are keen to keep the 20-year-old Danish centre-back as they prepare for their Champions League campaign.

The Bodo/Glimt youngster has not been a crucial member of Kjetil Knutsen’s squad so far this season, often finding himself on the bench, but is still seen as important to the manager’s plans.

It can be expected that Coventry will either return to the bidding table for Charlie Hughes at Hull City, or look elsewhere as they hope to seal a deal before the close of the window.

Frank Lampard’s plans have been affected by Hull City stance on Charlie Hughes

Every year, clubs are always keen to get their business done as soon as possible.

Rushing around on deadline day can have its difficulties, especially when there is a sense of urgency that one position needs to be significantly bolstered.

Coventry City and Frank Lampard find themselves in that position due to not being able to make advances on Charlie Hughes at Hull City.

While the Sky Blues may continue to monitor Hughes, the fact that he seems happy to stay at the MKM Stadium makes it a challenging deal to conclude from Lampard’s point of view.

Lampard will hope that his side can identify a defender to his squad ahead of the looming deadline.
