How Celtic could derail Leicester City’s pursuit of ‘class’ Eredivisie winger

Leicester City picked up a vital 1-0 away victory over Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon, and now Marti Cifuentes has just a week to shape his squad.

It’s not been the best of summers for the Foxes, but they have picked up two wins from three in the Championship in 2025/26, with those results leaving them just outside the play-offs at this early stage of the season.

The East Midlands outfit host Birmingham City on Friday evening at the King Power Stadium, with Blues last beating Leicester in the 2011/12 campaign, with Chris Davies’ side chasing an EFL record.

Nevertheless, there is the potential for a new face to be in the team for Cifuentes this weekend, but the Foxes do face a transfer threat from Celtic for an Eredivisie winger.

Celtic and Leicester City set to battle it out for Calvin Stengels

Leicester are looking to bring in more attacking power on their wings, and Feyenoord’s Calvin Stengels has come on to their radar recently.

However, according to Anthony Joseph, Scottish giants Celtic are also keen on the 26-year-old, who is yet to feature for his current side this season.

But, the Bhoys will only progress with a deal if they make it through to the League Phase of the Champions League, having already explored the ‘conditions’ of a potential transfer.

Stengs has made nine appearances in the Champions League himself, while playing a further two times in the qualifying stages of the competition. However, he seems unlikely to feature for Feyenoord again in the near-future with the club happy to let him depart.

While he is now out-of-favour in Rotterdam, the winger started out as a key player for the club, but a few injury issues saw him lose his place in the starting XI.

Maintaining fitness is crucial if Stengs is to make an impact at Leicester, if they do win the race for his signature. However, Robin van Persie, the manager of the Dutch side, has acknowledged in the past how well the ex-AZ Alkmaar man can come back from time away from the team.

He said in May (via: feyenoord.com): “Calvin has been training fully for a while now and that’s going really well. He will not start, that is not logical given his situation, but he is not the type of player who necessarily needs a lot of rhythm.

“When I see him busy at training… the class is dripping from that.”
