Much more would have been expected from Ipswich Town in the early stages of the new Championship campaign.
Kieran McKenna has not had it all his own way since relegation from the Premier League was confirmed, with his side losing key players such as Liam Delap to Chelsea for £30m and Omari Hutchinson to Nottingham Forest.
Chuba Akpom will be hoping to make his full debut for the Tractor Boys this weekend against Derby County, with the Suffolk outfit having beaten the Rams in their last two meetings.
Nevertheless, Ipswich are not resting on their laurels and they are now closing in on a new full-back after showing interest in Issa Kabore from Manchester City.

Ipswich Town pursue deal for West Brom’s Darnell Furlong
The Tractor Boys have been focused on adding to the defence in the last few weeks, and they have once again turned their attention to West Brom to find that strength.

According to John Percy, Ipswich are ‘close’ to signing Darnell Furlong from the Baggies, with a deal worth £4m agreed.
£3.5m of that is a guaranteed fee, while there is also a £500k promotion add-on if McKenna’s side do return to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Alex Palmer, Conor Townsend and Dara O’Shea have all played for West Brom in recent years before eventually joining Ipswich. Furlong will add to this contingent as the Suffolk club look to add more depth at right-back following Axel Tuanzebe’s departure to Burnley.

Darnell Furlong will add a new dynamic to the Tractor Boys
In the last few years, clubs have started to add long throw-ins as a set-piece tactic on a more frequent basis.
West Brom have benefited from this through Furlong, and now it is McKenna who will get the opportunity to add a new dynamic to his team’s game.

Akpom and George Hirst will be huge threats from these scenarios, while it also brings the likes of O’Shea into attacking positions on a more regular basis from defence.
Ipswich are now starting to use their financial strength in the transfer market as they look to turn this poor start around, and Ben Johnson will feel as though his position is at risk with Furlong on the way.
