Millwall have been relatively quiet so far this transfer window as they look to build on a strong performance in the Championship last season.

The Lions finished the season strongly in 2024/25, with Alex Neil taking Millwall to the brink of a surprise play-off spot.

They narrowly missed out but are tipped to be dark horses in the coming campaign. However, the lack of Millwall signings so far this summer has left plenty feeling a little underwhelmed.

Meanwhile, the club bid farewell to Zian Flemming at the start of the transfer window as he moved to Premier League club Burnley for a significant £7 million fee.

That transfer got EFL Analysis thinking about what the five most expensive sales Millwall have ever made are.

So, here is a list of exactly that, according to Transfermarkt.

5. Steve Morison – £2.75 million

Starting off our list is a fan favourite at Millwall, having spent seven seasons with the club across two spells, scoring 92 goals in 343 appearances for the Lions.

It was in his first spell that he would demand the huge figure of £2.75 million, as he moved to Norwich City, who were in the Premier League, after impressing the season before for Millwall.

His two seasons at Carrow Road would be quite contrasted, with his first going perfectly as he scored 10 goals in 37 matches before only managing two the next campaign in 22 appearances.

Steve Morison would then struggle at Leeds United before returning to the Den in the summer of 2015 after leaving for Norwich four years earlier.

4. Steven Reid – £3.1 million

Steven Reid rose through the youth system at Millwall and featured in the senior team for six seasons before leaving the club to join Blackburn Rovers.

The Republic of Ireland international would be a fairly consistent performer across his career, proving to be quite adept in the English top flight for both Rovers and West Brom.

Blackburn signed him from Millwall ahead of the 2003/04 season after he made 167 appearances for the London club across both the Championship and League One.

The versatile player, who could operate in midfield or defence, is now a coach, working for a number of high-profile clubs in England, including Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

3. George Saville – £6.8 million

The Northern Ireland international joined Millwall in the summer of 2017, after having been loaned to the club on two separate occasions previously.

George Saville was a workhorse in midfield and captured the attention of many Championship rivals during his spell at the Den in his one full season contracted to the club.

He scored 10 goals in 45 appearances that campaign before Middlesbrough splashed the cash to sign the midfielder for them as they looked to earn their way back to the Premier League.

Saville is currently contracted to Luton Town ahead of this campaign following the expiration of his deal, with his second spell at Millwall proving not to be as fruitful.

2. Zian Flemming – £7 million

The Dutch forward was a revelation at Millwall when he joined, as he proved a clinical asset to the side, scoring 15 goals in his first campaign, the 2022/23 season.

He continued to feature heavily for Millwall the next season, this time, however, only scoring eight goals across the campaign.

Last season he was on loan at Burnley, and he helped them to achieve promotion to the Premier League, with the Clarets opting to sign him permanently after the successful spell.

Millwall will be pleased with the fee of £7 million they received, having brought him in for a reported £2.5 million from Fortuna Sittard.

1. Romain Esse – £12.4 million

The most expensive sale Millwall have ever made was when they sold Romain Esse to Crystal Palace in January of 2024 for a fee of £12.4 million.

Esse has yet to become a regular for Millwall’s south London rivals, as he has only made seven appearances for the Eagles.

He impressed at Millwall across the two and a half seasons of senior football he had played at the Den, with Palace noticing his potential to become a star.

The 20-year-old came through the youth ranks at Millwall, and the club will have been disappointed to have lost him to a rival, with the only consolation being the high fee they received for him.
