‘One of the best’ Birmingham City stars addresses future at club after conversation with Chris Davies

Birmingham City have been busy in the transfer market this summer and have been linked to many big names; however, they have been shrewd in their dealings.

The Blues have been linked to names that are recognisable to most English football fans, including Alexander Mitrovic and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, EFL Analysis exclusively unveiled they were not interested in signing Alexander Mitrovic.

Birmingham City had also recently been linked to a former Barcelona graduate and Xavi favourite; however, nothing has progressed since these opening links.

The club have also had to bid farewell to several players, with the highest-profile departure arguably being the loss of Krystian Bielik to West Brom.

Now another Birmingham City star has addressed his future with the club after the Blues’ elimination from the Carabao Cup to Port Vale.

Marc Leonard addresses his future at Birmingham City

Marc Leonard captained the Birmingham City side in their loss to Port Vale, but it must be mentioned that Chris Davies had made 10 changes to his starting team that secured victory over Oxford United at the weekend in the Championship.

Chris Davies admitted that his side lacked the fluidity they had in previous games this season and put this down to the changes he made.

Leonard was disappointed with the result despite being proud to wear the captain’s armband for Birmingham; however, he had to field questions about his future, as reported in Birmingham Live.

He said: “Right now I’m a Birmingham player; I’m here, and I’ve captained the team. Look, I want to be here. It’s a massive club.

“As the window has progressed, I’ve had good conversations with the manager here. We’ve got seven days to go, but I’m happy where I am.”

Chris Davies on Marc Leonard

So far this campaign Marc Leonard has had to accept a role as a substitute, or rotational option, in the Birmingham City squad this campaign.

Leonard, 23, is still behind midfield dynamos Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-ho in Davies’ thinking and hasn’t been short of interest in this summer’s transfer window.

However, Davies has admitted to Birmingham Live about just how good an option Marc Leonard is off the bench, something he stated last season.

Davies said: “Marc is probably one of the best players in the league that doesn’t play all the time.

“He’s got real quality, but he’s got very good players in the team as well.

“When he has come on in games, he has come on in a bit of a higher role in Willum’s position. His best position is probably a bit deeper, but he reads the game really well, he rarely gives the ball away, and he makes good decisions.

“He knows what this league is all about, and he competes well. I said to them inside that I thought every sub improved us, and that’s a good sign.”
