QPR receive bid for midfielder Marti Cifuentes described as a ‘good addition’, they could net over £4m in profit

Queens Park Rangers have had a bizarre few weeks, with their head coach Marti Cifuentes being placed on gardening leave at the end of the season.

The Spaniard was interested in taking over the vacant post at West Bromwich Albion, which is soon to be filled by Ryan Mason, but a move never developed and the R’s have a decision to make in terms of their next step.

Johannes Hoff Throup was one of those in like to take charge at Loftus Road after being sacked by Norwich City in April, but the Dane has rejected the chance to manage the club.

However, the confusion surrounding the managerial post in West London does leave them vulnerable now that the transfer window is open, and one of their top stars has already been targeted with a bid.

Espanyol submit for QPR midfielder Jonathan Varane

Jonathan Varane is the subject of an offer from La Liga side Espanyol, with West London Sport reporting the bid to be over £5m.

The defensive midfielder only joined the club last summer, with Cifuentes calling him a ‘good addition’ to the team following his debut in his post-match interview.

WLS have previously stated that the Frenchman cost £875,000 when he joined from Sporting Gijon and QPR would net a healthy profit from the deal.

However, at this moment in time, it looks likely that the R’s will reject Espanyol’s bid for the 23-year-old, after he played a crucial part in the team’s 2024/25 campaign, featuring 39 times in the Championship as his team finished 15th.

Jonathan Varane only recently signed a new deal at Loftus Road

Despite only signing for the club less than 12 months ago, Varane has already put pen-to-paper on his second contract in West London and he signed a long-term deal in May.

It is clear to see that QPR are keen on keeping hold of the 23-year-old, who will only improve in the coming years. However, the R’s are in a period of slight chaos, and with top flight football an option, Varane may pursue an exit.

Nevertheless, for now, Cifuentes has hold of his job and his midfielder, but in the coming weeks both situations could change quickly and supporters will have to sit and wait to see which path their club is set to go on.
