As Sheffield United continue to recruit following their poor start to the 2025/26 Championship season, they have identified one former Wednesday player to solve one key Ruben Selles issue.
Sheffield United’s start to the 2025/26 Championship season has been abysmal, with Ruben Selles recording four straight defeats so far, leaving the Blades rock-bottom of the table.
Alarm bells are ringing in S2, sparking a flurry of late activity from Sheffield United in the summer transfer window.
Sheffield United are set to sign Chedozie Ogbene, having beaten Leicester City to the signature of the Ipswich Town winger.
The Blades have also signed Alex Matos, whose move at Bramall Lane has now been confirmed by the club.
As a last-minute departure of Tom Cannon looks to be on the cards, Sheffield United are also keen on a late signing, turning towards one former Wednesday promotion winner.

Sheffield United identify former Wednesday defender Mark McGuinness as a ‘late target’
It has been revealed, via BBC Sheffield journalist Andy Giddings, that Sheffield United have identified Mark McGuinness as a ‘late target’ ahead of the summer transfer window slamming shut.
The pursuit of the Luton Town defender, which has been described as a ‘close one’ to keep an eye on, could see Ruben Selles continue to attempt to solve the defensive woes his side have faced so far this season.
McGuinness played a prominent role in the 2024/25 Championship season for Luton Town, playing 43 Championship games for the Hatters, scoring three goals and notching two assists.
He also played for Cardiff City in the 2023/24 season and the latter stages of 2022/23. He notably found himself at Sheffield Wednesday in the campaign before, where he played for the Owls in the first half of their promotion-winning season ahead of a move to South Wales.

Mark McGuinness has the Championship experience needed for the Blades
Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles requires leaders who have played previously at Championship level, and Mark McGuinness fits the bill perfectly.
McGuinness has proven to be a commanding centre-back, who will provide much more structure to the side, something that was non-existent before the defeat to Middlesbrough, which saw the Blades look a bit more assured in defence because of the arrival of Japhet Tanganga.
There is the clear and obvious downside of the centre-back being a former Sheffield Wednesday player, but I am sure Blades fans can look past a half-season spell across the Steel City if it means bringing in a solid defensive option.
