Sheffield United fans are raving about Alex Matos signing but they all want one more thing

Sheffield United have completed their eleventh signing of the summer – but Blades fans aren’t convinced the club will be able to get the most out of the new additions.

Alex Matos has arrived at Bramall Lane on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, joining from Chelsea after loans in the English Football League with Huddersfield Town and then Oxford United.

Before Matos’ arrival on deadline day, the Championship basement club also recently recruited Japhet Tanganga – who Millwall have already replaced – and Tahith Chong from Luton Town.

EFL Analysis understands Gustavo Hamer is heading for the exit, so Sheffield United fans are pleased to see the arrival of midfielder Matos. However, they still only have one thing on their mind after their winless start.

Sheffield United focused on wanting Ruben Selles sacked

Sheffield United’s trip to Middlesbrough turned toxic after the Blades suffered a 1-0 loss, with Selles being heavily booed after failing to pick up a single point in four Championship fixtures.

The Blades’ play-off push last term now seems a distant memory, and the former Reading boss has now overseen the worst start in 30 years to a campaign outside the top flight.

Replies to the news of United signing Matos were full of supporters excited by his arrival, but a number of fans couldn’t help but point out what they deem as a glaring issue staring the fanbase in the face.

After the Blades announced their new signing by stating he can ‘operate in a number of positions’, one fan replied: “Is one of those positions head coach?”

Another fan, also hinting at thinking Selles needs to be sacked, said: “All these new players on board, and no captain to steer the ship. Selles ain’t the guy to get the best out of em.”

At the time of writing, skipper Jack Robinson and Selles are still at the club – and the latter says he wants to ‘keep going’ despite the worrying start to the campaign.

Ruben Selles says he and Sheffield United will ‘keep fighting’

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after the loss at Middlesbrough, Selles said: “I’m disappointed of course, with the result and the situation that we have been living.

“It’s not going for us, we are going to keep fighting, keep going and keep trying to fight for that moment that is going to change the dynamic.

“Sometimes when you’re in those moments, it’s difficult but we played against a very good team and we had situations in the first half in a 50:50 game and then in the second half until they scored a goal, I think we were dominant.”

The international break comes at the perfect time for United, who will likely be breathing a sigh of relief at the idea of having a fortnight to regroup out of the limelight.

The Blades face Ipswich Town on Friday 12 September.
