This season has been a nightmare for Sheffield United, and they are struggling at both ends of the pitch, with no points from their first four games.
There is a serious lack of confidence from those in the forward positions for the Blades, with Ruben Selles even having three different striker options on the bench in his side’s 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough at the weekend.

The South Yorkshire outfit have scored just once so far in 2025/26, the fewest number of goals in the division, and they are now the only side to have not picked up a single point.
Throughout the last few months, there have been question marks over the form of Tom Cannon, and now the forward may be on his way out of Sheffield United. Yet, there is one major issue in any potential exit.
Preston North End pursue deal for Sheffield United striker Tom Cannon
There were hopes that Cannon would become a key player at Bramall Lane, but he just has not found any sort of confidence in the final third and a move away could be perfect for him.

According to Alan Nixon, Preston North End are interested in bringing the ex-Everton striker to Deepdale on loan before the window shuts at 7pm. However, Sheffield United want the Lilywhites to cover his wages.
Nixon said: “Preston are making a late move to sign striker Tom Cannon on loan from Sheffield United, Cannon was a hit with North End before and could be the perfect extra forward they want for the squad.
“Blades spent heavily on Cannon but he has struggled and they will consider a loan deal to kick start him. United want Cannon’s wages paid in full which is a big stretch for Preston but that could change in the final hours.”

Preston North End saw the best of Tom Cannon before
Sheffield United have signed Alex Matos, and supporters are excited about his arrival. But new faces do mean others need to be let go of, and Cannon could be one of those.
While the issues surrounding his wages are a concern, Preston know exactly what they could possibly get from the 22-year-old.

He scored eight goals in 22 appearances for the Lilywhites in the 2022/23 campaign, as a poor end to the season for his former club saw a play-off place slip away from them.
Nevertheless, alongside Milutin Osmajic, Preston may be able to unlock Cannon and get him back on track after a really tough 2025.
