Sheffield United in talks for Premier League winger loan as Nathan Redmond update issued

Sheffield United are still looking for a winger before the end of the summer transfer window, and EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal they are in talks with Premier League clubs in their bid to sign one.

Former Southampton wide man Nathan Redmond has been training with the Blades, alongside Ben Mee and Danny Ings. The latter has since signed a deal with the South Yorkshire club, despite his links to Middlesbrough earlier this summer.

Japhet Tanganga is the latest star to join the Championship’s basement club after their surprisingly poor start to the season, with him signing from Millwall on Thursday on a three-year deal.

Sheffield United’s business appears to be far from over, though, and they are reportedly interested in Cardiff City youngster Cian Ashford. However, EFL Analysis understands they are also looking at the possibility of Premier League loans in their hunt for a winger.

Redmond is a free agent following the expiration of his Burnley contract after the Clarets got promoted to the Premier League. He made just three appearances last season for Scott Parker’s side after suffering another hamstring injury.

However, he’s now back fit and our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, says Redmond can still push his way into the Blades squad for the upcoming campaign.

That’s despite United looking to the Premier League for wingers too.

Bailey says: “I think Sheffield United are looking for other wingers. There’s obviously a lot of loan options in the Premier League emerging now.

“I think they are talking to a few, but obviously Redmond’s got a chance to stake his claim. I think if Redmond does sign in, they might still look for a loan signing from what I understand.”

With Redmond hoping to sign for his sixth club of his career, a number of young Premier League wingers are available and looking for regular minutes.

Sheffield United should look at Sunderland’s Patrick Roberts

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts has played just 27 Premier League minutes, so it’s hard to judge how he will deal with the step up to the top flight.

However, the Black Cats fell to defeat to League One Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup second round on Tuesday, and the former Manchester City player played 90 minutes of the clash his side lost 6-5 on penalties.

The game will have raised question marks over whether the 28-year-old could do with a Championship loan this season. Last campaign, he played 48 times for Sunderland in their play-off charge last term, scoring two goals and grabbing seven assists, including one in the final against the Blades.

He could be a great addition for Selles on the right wing, but they may need to move fast to stop rivals including Southampton, who also need wingers, sniffing round him.
