Former Premier League and England duo handed trials at Sheffield United after awful Blades start

Sheffield United have had a terrible opening three games of the Championship campaign, and they currently sit bottom of the table.

The Blades are one of two sides in the second tier to have not picked up a single point so far in 2025/26, but their 4-1 defeat to Bristol City on the opening day is proving costly at this point, with their goal difference two worse than Oxford United’s.

Nevertheless, with a week to go in the transfer window, there is still time for Ruben Selles to add to his squad, with goals and defensive strength both needed.

Ben Mee has been on trial with Sheffield United, and now the South Yorkshire outfit have brought in two more former Premier League players to train with the squad.

Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond join Sheffield United on trial

Experience is crucial at a time like this for the Blades, and Selles has turned attention to the free agent market once again as he pursues that.

According to The Star, both Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond have joined Sheffield United on trial following their departures from West Ham United and Burnley, respectively.

The two attacking talents both played for Selles while the Spaniard was in charge of Southampton in 2023, having originally taken charge of the Saints a year prior as caretaker boss.

Sheffield United may have already found the answer to their defensive problems in the form of Japhet Tanganga and Mee, therefore it is vital that they add more depth to the forward areas.

Danny Ings would be an excellent addition for the Blades

While there are obvious issues at the back for the Blades, they are also not providing enough threat while attacking, scoring once in their opening three league games.

Tom Cannon is lacking in confidence following a difficult start to life at Bramall Lane, while Tyreece Campbell has never been overly prolific.

Ings, who was linked with Middlesbrough previously, could be the answer to Selles’ problems having scored 72 Premier League goals in 240 appearances in his career.

At 33, this is a quick fix rather than a long-term solution. Nonetheless, that is exactly what Sheffield United need as pressure continues to mount on their head coach.
