Where Derby County stand in the race for Alfie Gilchrist as Chelsea seek ‘permanent’ deal

Derby County have been in the market for a right-back in the last few weeks, with injuries prevalent in that position.

The Rams have made 10 signings so far this summer, with Bobby Clark rejecting Sunderland in favour of Pride Park, while Dion Sanderson has reunited with John Eustace once again.

However, as already stated, the East Midlands outfit have been looking for another full-back with Kane Wilson still recovering from knee surgery, while Joe Ward and Ryan Nyambe are getting back to full fitness.

Nevertheless, it emerged on Tuesday evening that Derby are interested in Chelsea’s Alfie Gilchrist, as per Mike McGrath, and EFL Analysis has an update on the situation.

Chelsea’s stance in Alfie Gilchrist’s Derby County situation explained

At 21, Gilchrist is a very exciting talent with plenty of potential which he perhaps did not show at all times last season at Sheffield United on loan.

However, Derby are keen on bringing him to the club, and our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, has exclusively told EFL Analysis Chelsea’s current stance on the right-back.

He said: “He’s seen a lot of options disappear. He’s seen Blackburn sign Miller. Middlesbrough obviously signed Brittain. Derby are now emerging as a realistic option. Watford have asked about him as well.

“I think there’s a fair chance he ends up at Derby at this point. I would say they’re the most advanced as it stands. Chelsea are looking at permanent, and while they could loan him, I think it’s more likely to be a permanent deal.”

John Eustace has two strong options he’s chasing at right-back

While Gilchrist is on the Rams’ radar, there is also significant interest in Sturm Graz right-back, Max Johnston.

Derby have had two bids rejected for the Scottish defender in the last week, but he was not involved in his side’s most recent fixture in the Austrian Bundesliga.

The Rams’ interest in either one of these full-backs could end quickly if the other is brought in, but with hold-ups in that particular deal currently, Gilchrist has entered the frame.

Nonetheless, dislodging Wilson from his position will be tough once he does return from injury, and Eustace has plenty of quality in that area of the pitch, with Derby’s head coach holding his cards close to his chest.
