Wigan Athletic given clear run to sign highly-rated League One star as Championship clubs stall

Wigan Athletic have already recruited well this summer, and they may be about to land one of the hottest properties in League One.

After a bitterly disappointing effort last term, Wigan parted ways with Shaun Maloney and installed Ryan Lowe as their new manager.

The Latics will be hoping to do far better than the 15th place finish they achieved in 2024/25, and a string of impressive signings have made them dark horses for League One in the coming campaign.

Now, they could be about to add to their squad with one of the best players in League One, despite reported interest from Championship sides.

In an EFL Analysis exclusive via information from our Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey, we can reveal Wigan Athletic are currently at the front of the pack when it comes to signing Ethan Erhahon.

The Lincoln City man is thought to be in high demand, but as of yet, we are told no Championship clubs have come forward with an offer.

Wigan are now close to agreeing a deal for the 24-year-old, who has made it clear he wants to leave Lincoln City this summer.

Last week it was thought Swansea City were looking to sign Erhahon, but that has not materialised into anything formal at this stage.

Wigan Athletic have done great business so far this summer

If Wigan can get this signing of Erhahon over the line, they would surely jump up in people’s estimations when it comes to League One predictions.

They’ve already brought in two new strikers, including Paul Mullin, who’s desperate to get back on track after a tough season with Wrexham last year.

Add to that the likes of Dara Costelloe and Fraser Murray out wide, and Callum Wright in the midfield, and Ryan Lowe suddenly has a strong squad to work with this season.

Whether they can challenge for the play-offs remains to be seen, but there will surely be an improvement on last season’s showing for Wigan now.
