Frank Lampard can spoil his own Millwall prediction as Coventry City aim to maintain incredible run

When Coventry City face Millwall this week, Frank Lampard will be hoping to prove himself completely wrong and harm the Lions’ promotion hopes in the process.

After a thumping 3-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday, Coventry City sit in second place in the Championship table and are one of only two teams in the league yet to taste defeat this term.

Frank Lampard can continue his fine work against Millwall on Wednesday night, but a trip to The Den is never easy.

He will go there without the injured Jack Rudoni, too. And, having suffered defeat at the hands of Millwall already this season, Lampard would be right to be wary.

Frank Lampard expects Millwall to land Championship play-off spot

Coventry crashed out of the Carabao Cup back in August after losing 2-1 at The Den. It’s the only loss the Sky Blues have experienced this season, but Lampard was not too downhearted about it at the time.

Speaking after the game, he said: “I think they’ve got a strong squad and strong players, and they were pushing [for the play-offs] at the end of last season, and we managed to get in there. They were not far away at all.

“They went on a really good run. They are a good team and squad. They recruit well at times, they have a certain style. They have that something about them that’s difficult to play against, and even their results early season, you’ve seen that. I expect them to be there or thereabouts, pushing for play-offs.”

Millwall were struggling at home until last week’s win over Watford. Now, they’ll be keen to make it back-to-back wins in front of the home crowd in East London.

Coventry City are destined to improve on last season’s efforts

In our Championship preview for 2025/26, just like Lampard himself, we did back Millwall to be dark horses for promotion. We also suggested Coventry would be in the mix for the play-offs.

But, as things stand, they can go one better and clinch automatic promotion. Lampard was able to keep his squad largely intact, fending off interest in Rudoni towards the end of the transfer window.

Coventry’s secret weapon is in that consistency and rhythm they’ve built up as a unit over the last 10 months under Lampard. There has been no major upheaval and the manager has been able to really shape the squad and the system into his style. The Sky Blues are now reaping the rewards of that.

While sides like Southampton flounder, there’s always going to be a gap for a team to sneak into that top two, and there’s no reason Coventry can’t be that team.

They’re proving difficult to beat, grinding out points, and while it may not always be as spectacular as a 7-1 win over QPR, there’s a lot to be said for simply plugging away across 46 games.
