Sheffield Wednesday must avoid matching 26-year record as QPR make trip to Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday return to Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon as Henrik Pedersen looks to make it back-to-back victories in the Championship.

Dejphon Chansiri has missed payment deadlines once again, and the Owls’ off-field problems are continuing to grow, but on the pitch, there has been some positivity.

The South Yorkshire outfit beat Portsmouth 2-0 last weekend at Fratton Park, extending their gap over bottom of the table Sheffield United to four points.

Now, QPR make the trip to S6, but for Sheffield Wednesday, home has not quite been where the heart is this season and they must find a way to avoid defeat on Saturday as the threat of a 26-year-old record grows.

Sheffield Wednesday have not lost four home games at the start of a season since 1999

Barry Bannan has asked for better communication from Chansiri, and while those issues away from the football are pressing, supporters will be concerned about the team’s form at home.

The Owls have lost all three of their games at Hillsborough in the Championship this season, conceding eight goals and failing to register a goal of their own.

Many expect Sheffield Wednesday to get relegated in 2025/26, but this run of defeats on their own patch is greatly worrying and if they are beaten by QPR this weekend, it will be only the second time in the club’s history that they have started a season with four successive losses at home.

This poor start resulted in the Owls suffering relegation to the second tier from the Premier League, and they have not returned to the top flight since.

Sheffield Wednesday’s issues at home are not a new problem

Picking up four points from three away games is a very good return, but having difficulties in finding form at Hillsborough is something that the club saw last season.

Under Danny Rohl, who left Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, the Owls had the second-worst home record in the Championship in 2024/25.

They won just six games, drawing eight times and losing nine. Rohl’s side conceded 32 goals, scoring 30 of their own and had it not been for their excellent away form, the threat of relegation would have been great.

QPR are a side in form, and despite a 7-1 defeat to Coventry City in August, the R’s are battling for a play-off spot and they will be looking to inflict more pain on Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
