Hull City have sold a share for a substantial £14.5m fee, as Kieran Maguire gives insight into the possibilities over why it has been done.
It has been a turbulent summer for Hull City, who were handed a transfer fee restriction this summer after failing to meet payments to other clubs on time.
Hull City owner Acun Ilicali was determined to get the sanctions dropped, but they only managed to see the duration of the transfer fee restriction limited to just two windows, as opposed to the original three.
Following a transfer period that has seen Hull City pick up shrewd deals on a free, including Oli McBurnie, it has now been revealed that the club have sold a £14.5m share, with some clarity behind the decision being given by finance expert Kieran Maguire.

What Kieran Maguire has said as Hull City sell £14.5m share
It was spotted, via Kieran Maguire on X, that Hull City issued a share on Friday, who later revealed that it was worth the price of £14.5m.
The total of £14.5m has been paid for a £1 share, which Maguire believes is ‘unlikely to be outside investment’.
Offering more insight on the sale, Maguire then suggested that it was likely ‘more cash to pay the wages and keep the lights on’, and that it is ‘Almost certainly Acun’.
It was the first share issue by Hull City of the Acun Ilicali period, with the previous one taking place in October 2017 following the Tigers’ drop from the Premier League.
Hull City transfer fee ban has been a blessing in disguise
When Hull City were first hit with a transfer fee restriction, supporters were understandably up in arms, venting their frustration at Acun Ilicali for the precarious position he had put the club in.
On the positive side, it has given Hull City a period of time to breathe. With the lack of spending throughout the 2025/26 season, there is hope that their financial difficulties will become less severe, and will hopefully help provide more stability.
As well as that, Hull City’s recruitment this summer has been leagues above the preceding season, and that is with thanks to Tigers Head of Recruitment Jared Dublin, who has done brilliantly to fashion a solid Championship squad for Sergej Jakirovic.
