BBC pundit gives Sheffield United owners rare praise following Ruben Selles ‘mistake’

Sheffield United owners COH Sports have been handed a rare compliment following their decision to relieve Ruben Selles of his duties, while Chris Wilder waits in the wings.

Sheffield United have sacked Ruben Selles following five Championship games.

Selles’ position became untenable in S2 following Sheffield United’s 5-0 defeat against Ipswich Town, which saw the Blades dismantled on their travels.

In five Championship games, Sheffield United had only found the back of the net once, which caused COH Sports to take swift action.

It is expected that Chris Wilder will return to Sheffield United, with EFL Analysis exclusively revealing that, while the former Blades was handed a substantial payoff after departing the club, it is being paid monthly, meaning that bringing him back would save them hundreds of thousands of pounds in the process.

Following the managerial merry-go-round at Bramall Lane, the Sheffield United owners have come under scrutiny, but BBC pundit Rob Staton has delivered them some rare praise following their recent decision.

Sheffield United owners receive praise for owning up to mistake after sacking Ruben Selles

The decision to part ways with Ruben Selles was confirmed on Sunday, bringing an end to the shortest ever managerial reign at Sheffield United.

While the decision did not come as a surprise, given the nature of Selles’ record at Sheffield United, some were sceptical if the owners would own up to their mistake of bringing the Spaniard in for Chris Wilder.

Following Selles’ dismissal, BBC pundit Rob Staton gave his verdict on COH Sports’ decision to act swiftly.

“Having made the mistake, there’s not many owners who’d show the humility to acknowledge the mistake,” said Staton on BBC Sheffield.

“They need to think about how they’re going to approach things now. Really, they should do things the Chris Wilder way.”

Chris Wilder will inherit a difficult challenge at Bramall Lane

As Chris Wilder looks set to return to Sheffield United, there is no downplaying the situation he will have to sort out at the club.

The incoming Blades boss has a record of overachieving with Sheffield United, but if he were able to achieve promotion this season, it would top all of his other accolades.

Sheffield United have the players to find themselves in the higher echelons of the Championship table, but Wilder will have to do so without a pre-season and without several key players who moved on from the club this summer.

One thing that is certain, though, is that if there is anyone who can breathe new life into this Sheffield United side, it is Chris Wilder.
