Sheffield Wednesday fans have all praised Barry Bannan after he reportedly decided to stay at the club.

Following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, where Sheffield Wednesday finished in a mundane, yet respectable 12th-place finish, the off-season has been anything but calm.

Sheffield Wednesday players and staff have been paid weeks late by Dejphon Chansiri; some members of the first team are still left in the dark regarding the payments they are yet to receive, and to top it off, the Owls’ owner is undergoing a dispute with Danny Rohl.

It seems as though any good news is few and far between for Owls supporters at the moment, but moods were lifted in S6 after Barry Bannan decided that he wishes to stay at Sheffield Wednesday, despite the ongoing issues at the club.

After the news broke, Sheffield Wednesday fans have shown their gratitude to the man who has clearly put personal security behind the importance of the club.

Sheffield Wednesday fans serenade Barry Bannan as a ‘legend’ following future decision

With Bannan showing ambition to stay at Hillsborough Stadium and see his career out at Sheffield Wednesday, Owls fans have taken to social media to express praise towards the club captain.

Writing on X, one Owls supporter referred to Bannan as the ‘biggest legend of the last 50 years’ and Sheffield Wednesday, whilst another said that ‘he definitely deserves a statue’.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans followed that similar thinking, stating that he should be immortalised with a statue outside Hillsborough Stadium.

One fan said: ‘Build that statue! The term ‘legend’ gets thrown around loads these days but this guy truly is a club legend!’

The praise continued for Bannan, as one said: ‘What a remarkable bloke. No one would say a word if he decided to go as he is perfectly entitled to. The word “legend” is used far to often, but in the case of Barry Bannan, it couldn’t be more fitting.’

Another supporter referenced the fact that he was offered to join Wrexham, as he said: ‘Not enough words to describe him. Has the opportunity to join one of, if not THE best run club in the UK, making his name known in the USA, mixing it with Hollywood stars, playing for a club with ambition. Yet opts to fight for the club who can’t even pay him on time. STATUE-NOW!’

Players will hopefully follow in Barry Bannan’s footsteps this summer

It would be incredibly difficult for players to commit their future to Sheffield Wednesday in the current climate of financial uncertainty. You would think that, if players do decide to move on, they will be well within their rights considering the state of the club right now.

However, Bannan’s selfless decision to stay at the club will make a huge difference at Sheffield Wednesday, and there will be hopes that other players decide to follow suit. Bannan is the heartbeat and the spine of this Sheffield Wednesday side, and the alarm bells would no doubt be going off if they were unable to keep him next season.

Providing that Chansiri can now offer Bannan a contract, hopefully, things will start looking up for the club, knowing that their legendary Scotsman will be on board for another term.
