EFL expert gives honest verdict on Hull City decision over Ruben Selles as ‘disaster’ looms

Hull City’s decision to part ways with coach Ruben Selles has been branded as ‘daft’.

Hull City made the call to sack Ruben Selles following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Championship season.

Despite Ruben Selles successfully keeping Hull City in the Championship, with a last-day draw at Portsmouth keeping their noses ahead of Luton Town on goal difference, Tigers chief Acun Ilicali has stated that he wasn’t impressed by the side’s form in the back end of the season, notching just two wins in the final eight.

The decision to sack Selles comes 12 months after Hull City sacked Liam Rosenior for his style of football, a decision that, in hindsight, wasn’t the best judged for the Tigers.

Now Hull have parted ways with Selles, Ilicali has once again come under scrutiny, this time from an EFL expert, who has suggested why it could be yet another ‘disaster’ move for the club.

EFL expert Justin Peach casts doubt over Acun Ilicali’s decision to sack Hull City boss Ruben Selles

Speaking on the Second Tier Podcast, Justin Peach made his feelings clear about Ilicali’s decision, but suggests that it wasn’t a surprise based on his track record of sacking previous coaches.

“There are doubts within the hierarchy that Ruben Selles is the man to deliver success,” said Peach. “But when you consider the fact that they appointed Shota Averladze, who was a disaster, sacked Liam Rosenior, which was a disaster, then appointed Tim Walter, which was a disaster.

“I’m sensing a theme of really bad decision-making at the very top of the club, so I think I said as well shortly after the season finished that I think the main thing that Hull needs is stability. They need consolidation, I think Ruben Selles is the guy who can deliver that, so sacking him, I think, would be a pretty daft decision.”

Selles is the fifth coach to be dismissed by Ilicali since he took over control of the club from the Allams. Several contenders have already been named for the Hull City coaching vacancy, although it would be understandable that some may now have reservations over joining the club because of Ilicali’s track record.

Was Ruben Selles the best person to deliver the Tigers’ success next season

Selles joined Hull when they were planted firmly at the bottom of the Championship table, taking over from Tim Walter, who oversaw a hugely unsuccessful 18-game spell with the club.

Selles’s ability to keep Hull City up certainly reflects on the fact that he did a positive job; his role was to keep the Tigers in the Championship first and foremost.

However, Ilicali still clearly has ambitions for a play-off push, something that he perceived to be out of Selles’ capability.

Whether Ilicali has or hasn’t made the wrong decision, there needs to be more of the blame put on the recruitment last season, which certainly played a part in the Tigers’ poor form at the end of the campaign.

Ilicali, no matter who is the coach for the upcoming season, must prioritse recruitment; with the current set of players, a play-off push is untenable.
