How Sheffield Wednesday can use EFL loophole to deal with Pierce Charles emergency

Sheffield Wednesday are set to travel to Wales to face Wrexham this weekend in their latest Championship fixture.

While there may have been a hope for Josh Windass to face his former club, the Wrexham striker is currently ruled out through injury and will take no part in the fixture.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to look for some salvation on the pitch as their problems off it continue with fresh protests planned in London as supporters continue to fight against Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.

The Owls are in desperate need of some recruits, as their squad is lacking any experience or depth to compete in the Championship for the whole campaign.

Despite being linked with several players over the last week, including Jaden Heskey from Manchester City, nothing has transpired.

Now things appear to be getting worse as injuries to their key players are starting to occur, and this may have a detrimental impact on the club.

Sheffield Wednesday may need an emergency loan after Pierce Charles ‘injury concern’

It has been first reported in the Star that Sheffield Wednesday may be able to get an emergency loan in for their goalkeeper crisis following the injury to Pierce Charles.

Killian Barrett is also believed to be carrying a knock; they have only academy goalkeepers to call upon as things stand, and so this may allow them to make an emergency loan for a ‘professional goalkeeper’.

As per the English Football League’s regulations, they would be able to sign an emergency loan stopper due to the lack of ‘professional goalkeepers’ available.

The terms of an emergency loan also state that it ‘shall be for a period of seven days, inclusive of the starting date and finishing date’, and that it ‘may be renewed for seven days at a time’.

Wednesday would also have to provide proof that unavailable players have been ‘certified by an independent medical practitioner as being unfit to play’.

In theory, the Owls should be able to bring in a goalkeeper ahead of this weekend’s trip to Wrexham; however, they would have to get it finalised and approved by noon on Saturday.

Pierce Charles’ injury

The Northern Ireland international has suffered an injury that will leave him out of the squad for a substantial period of time.

Charles suffered a shoulder injury against Stoke City at the weekend, but tests indicate that the problem is worse than first thought.

The 20-year-old has been the subject of interest from several clubs; however, Chansiri is not willing to sell Charles at this moment in time, despite the funds that the club could bring in for the goalkeeper.
