Kieran McKenna has explained what ‘underpins success’ for Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town have struggled at the beginning of their new campaign, having failed to win any of their opening four games across the Championship and Carabao Cup.

The Tractor Boys’ latest failure to secure a win in the league with a 1-0 loss to Preston North End means it is only one win in their last 22 fixtures, demonstrating that there are serious issues at the club at present.

These struggles have led many to believe that more business needs to be done in the transfer market to inject fresh energy into the squad to turn this form around.

EFL Analysis did exclusively reveal the plans the club have in the transfer market before it closes on September 1.

Ipswich are set to sign Sindre Walle Egeli for £17.2m from FC Nordsjaelland, and he could be named as their latest signing in the coming days.

Kieran McKenna on how Ipswich can be successful this season

While Ipswich are looking to bring some players into the squad ahead of the closure of the transfer window, Kieran McKenna is not putting all his eggs in that basket.

The Northern Irishman understands that the club may not be able to sign all their targets and even admitted that should their hopes be placed on one signing, it is always possible they could get injured and they would be back to square one.

So, he has admitted to the East Anglian Daily Times that they must focus on who is currently in their squad and build success from that.

He said: “As a manager you always have to focus on the players that you have and not what may or may not come in the door, or somebody who might not stay.

“What really underpins success, and has really underpinned our success, has been culture, work ethic; it’s been the day-to-day processes here, pushing to get better every day.

“At the end of the day, what’s going to make you successful isn’t whether we bring in one player or four players in the next week, or whether we lose one player or no player or two players; it’s going to be culture, how we work, how we push, and we do that together.

“So that’s where my focus is. Hopefully we have a good last week of the window – but it’s all the other stuff which is going to make us successful.”

Ipswich Town looking to end poor form

Kieran McKenna will be desperate to bring an end to their poor form, and this will begin with a victory this weekend against Derby County at Portman Road.

The club may have several fresh faces in by then; however, McKenna will not care who is on the pitch as long as they secure three points.

Ipswich will look to lean on their historical form against Derby County, as they have won 39 times, while the Rams have 29 victories to their name, and there have been 22 draws.

McKenna will be hoping to continue his winning run against Derby this weekend as the Championship gears up for its first international break of the season.
